When I was a kid, I worked for a locksmith who in his spare time developed a carburetor that through a series if decreasing orifices, broke down the gasoline molecules to increase their ability to burn, therefor increasing efficiency. (I do know that he had some success with the concept).

Maybe the screen does somehow help to smooth out the flow or somehow break up the gasoline to make it mix and burn better.
The idea merits investigation.

This looks like a press in seat to me more so than a main jet.
If so......... what a terrible place for a filter!

maybe someone could contact Amal or John Healy and ask the purpose intended for. Something made them worth producing and fitting for some engines.

Just to say thanks to Hobot for posting the Amal info. & tuning link. Most informative. Also the mesh sock was fitted to a new old stock MK 2 I purchased a few years ago, 4 stroke type I think.

matchless

you are very correct the mesh screens were fitted stock on the Spanish MK2 carbs

PS are AMAL ever going to re manufacture the MK2 ? they seem to have dried up big time

I was gonna call Amal but its rather long distance with time zone bother so maybe a more local fella can ping them and get the low down on the diffuser screen purpose-application-advantage-problem solver and conditions its a determent or not.
