Another Tri-spark Complaint

3rd stator in less than 15,000 miles. i slotted the points cover to give the 2nd stator some air flow and it still went out. after the 1st one went out i got a spare to Carry with me. that was a good thing as it went out last year while on a ride. i e mailed trispark about the outrageous cost of a replacement stator being higher than a complete pazon system and he offered a more reasonable price.so i still have a spare in the tank bag but when this one fails it will be replaced with a pazon and someone will get a deal on a complete trispark with a new stator.

One of the reasons for EI is that mechanical AAU are no longer made as far as I know. And I bet there are more than a few people out there
who burned a hole in a piston due to timing going off. For me, on the Trident, 3 sets of points and keeping them on the money is just
too difficult or rather too much to rely upon. Less so on the twins though.

That's what you get for having one of those new-fangled multis! :)

Well I am glad I went down the JH maggie road hearing about the troubles poeple incounter with EI, this is my second JH on a British bike my old Triumph I put a second hand JH on it had it on for 9 years and 250,000 ks of trouble free riding then the newer JH come on the market to fit straight on the Norton and so far 40,000 mile with out even touching it except for putting a few drops of STP on the felts for the points arm lube, some say it looks ugly hanging out the side but I just love it and the best part no need for a battery and min wiring.
People complain about the old Boyas but I ran one on my Norton for over 33 years without any problems with it, never had any problems with kick back in all that time as most complain about kick back.

Elecktronic Sachs on my t160 and lucaa Rita on my commando never a problem
I have often wondered why people don't use elecktronic Sachs on commandos ? Same spec as Tri spark but with out the reliability problems ,,, does anyone on this site use it on their commando ??

I have Rita system I'm thinking about using. Any feedback on it?

the rita is a good reliable EI BUT it does not play well with a dual output coil. use the stock coils and you should not have any issues.

A rev limiter is not a bad thing. It could be worth the initial investment in the EI one day.

That cd be part of it, more than $450 delivered. If you wanted a rev limiter and a choice of advance curves, it looks pretty good.

There's a cheaper alternative with three advance curves and no rev limiter.

Over the years, I bought too many AAUs. As you know, the AAUs wear and then they occasionally, or usually, stick in the advanced position and that makes for unpredictable kick back on starting, unpredictable idling, and general difficulty in adjusting the carbs. Good riddance. Yes, Trispark's advance curve and its trick hit and miss idle retard were deciding factors for me.

6,000 miles on mine and a 7 day run to Austria and back in 30 Degree plus heat - no issues, did not miss a beat.

It would seem that the more Tri-Spark ignitions have been produced and installed, the more their failure rate is catching up to the others.

I’ve had 4 (on different bikes) and had zero failures so far.

So they’re still my ‘go to’ EI choice.

Does anyone want to buy my ignition then? Have the new stator I bought for spare and used once to get bike home 2 miles away. Also the one that quit because of heat. Works after cooling off. I really wish I had better luck with it.

I'd be interested in the spare. I had one in my toolkit but it fell off the bike somewhere. :(

I too had failure problems with my first Trispark six years ago, my ignition would cut off on a ride and I would have to call for a trailer. Matt at CNW was just great to work with as always.
Matt sent me a new one that was updated with better packing of the material inside the plastic and I have had zero problems for the past five years now. I am a big Trispark, and CNW fan.

At one time CNW stopped offering warranty on Tri-Spark ignitions if stock coils were used. I see no mention of that now on the web site. Has this issue been solved in the time since I last owned one?

FWIW, I have been running my TS with the original OEM pair of coils ever since the original installation in '08 or 09 with no issues at all. I would not run an ignition that can't use those coils (original or OEM-replacement) because, to me, that's a big part of the "look" of the bike; even bigger than the ham-can air box! :)
