I bought this bike the other day. I've been working on the deal for several months now, and was finally able to pry it away (almost forcefully) from the owners hands. He's owned it since 1977, and the last registration in California was 1980. It is largely original, except for the Dunstall style silencers and Honda tail lamp lense. The single Mikuni will have to go, and make room for Jim's flatslide carbs. Needs everything, but so complete. Peculiar how the front brake is on the wrong side for a MK3. He thinks it happened when he took it in for some work back in the late 70s. It's got compression and seems to shift through the gears, but this bike will get the works. Of course, Brent will paint it for me. It's got a production date of 12/74, which I thought was interesting. It is apparently a pretty early MK3 Commando. Does anyone (LAB) know when the first Mk3 bikes hit the market?? He stripped the E-Starter and all of its accessories and stored them properly, so they all look brand new. Can't wait to dive into this one.

The 850 MK3 is very desirable bike, especially given the demographic of Commando riders. I put a skinny head gasket in mine along with open peashooters. With those minor changes, it has all kinds of grunt but still pulls smoothly and quickly past the red line if you aren't careful.
Since you aren't obsessed with originality (Carb choice) a better front brake is also a good upgrade, either the CNW Brembo or the Madass six pot.
I find the stock rear brake about ideal for power levels, not at all touchy but will lock the wheel on asphalt, even two up if desired.

Nice. Looks to be all there. I see the left footpeg is bent (or is that an optional dillusion?). Any other damage?

According to ZFD, Mk3 production commenced during mid-November '74, I think the official model release took place around Jan/Feb '75.
 
Having just done a ground up rebuild on a mk3 i can tell you its all worth it. I am really enjoying mine. 3000 miles on it now and no major issues. 80 mph all day no problem. Starter works everytime. I hope i didnt jinx it by saying that

HA! I just ran across a glass in-line fuel filter EXACTLY like that one just this past saturday. I set it in a more visible place, as i have a plan for it.
