Yes, I had to go back and remind myself. Sorry. But I don't have that kit and can't find it at harbor. Most of my bushings look pretty good, so I think I am just going to replace the sleeve gear bushings and the loose ones. The box only has 13K on it. My old swingarm spindle is about the right size, but I am going to try to press it in mostly with wood blocks if I can. I noticed I beat up the edges of the old bushings a bit getting them out using a 1/2" drive socket.

I notice that the layshaft fork has some heat blueing on the fingers the gear has very little. One side of the fingers seems to have taken some grinding too. Should I replace this fork? I see OB has some used ones for around $30.

I would certainly change it.

"Bluing" and wear on selector forks can often be associated with a rider having to keep their foot pressed on the gear lever to stop it jumping out of a particular gear, either because the gear is not being fully engaged by the selector mechanism (worn camplate slot, bushes, etc.?), or most likely because the dogs are worn?

Thanks, the gears that would be associated with holding it engaged would be layshaft 2 and 3. Here is a picture of the dogs, they don't look bad to me. The 3rd has some slight rounding of the corners, but the face and sides look clean and sharp.

I don't remember having to hold it into gear at all, but it has been 30 years, I think I would remember something like that though. The camplate looks clean and like new, no wear on it at all that I can tell. The only bushes that seemed worn were the above mentioned sleeve gear bushes. I am replacing all the loose bushes (and the sleeve gear bushes), maybe I should replace the pressed ones too? The layshaft did have some grunge on it but more towards the layshaft 4th gear, but it came right off with a bit of WD40 and some scotchbrite. I attributed it to sitting around with grungy oil in it. There was similar grunge on the inside of the case where the oil level was apparent.

The dogs don't look too bad, as far as I can tell from the photo?

Another possibility would be that the selector fork is slightly bent, which has caused it to rub against the side of the gear slot?

I'll get a new (used) fork from OB if it is clean and see what happens. This GB only has 13K miles on it and maybe with my new found knowledge will be able to take care of it better than before when I was completely ignorant (and lucky I guess). Every thing else in the GB looks in good shape. Got some sleeve retainer (locktite) for the main bearing which pretty much fell out when the sleeve gear came out, but it doesn't just go back in like that easily. I'll heat everything up to 350 for installation of the new bearings.
