Rather than add to an existing thread...

I have a '72 Combat 20827X but the VIN tag went when a Dunstall fairing was fitted back in the '70s Florida sunshine.
I know my previous one 20963X was July '72, but not much help here... :(
Andover don't have despatch record for this, so I'm hoping that the good folks here can provide some near neighbours so I can get the correct month of manufacture.

Thanks in advance

Good luck with that, my Combat is in the 206 range so should have been built in the spring but the NOC dating says despatch Sept 72, the later type crankcase machining (ref Atlantic Green) at the rear suggests this is correct as does the first registered date of Jan 74. The factory was in a mess in 72 trying to solve and then fix the problems so there must be a lot of bikes out of sequence, try the NOC as their records can cover more than the AN records (but also the other way round) .

This info came from the BSA club as many of the members have several British motorcycles.

If this helps, Norton twin engine numbers.
1963 from 104001
1964 from 108000
65/68 from 114870
69/70 from 138973
1971 from 142151
1972 from 200004
73/74 from 301000
1975 from 330000

Seems there is a way to compare numbers here? I registered my '72 when I signed up. Can't seem to find that now (or I look right at it and don't see it). I also have a 206*** number.

208xxx is mid-72 so 'year number' lists aren't that useful for identifying the "month of manufacture" which was what B+Bogus wanted to know.

My two... 201123 stamped Oct 71 and 201881 stamped Dec 71. I know 15xxxx was still being shipped at the same time, so difficult to estimate monthly production volume during this time.

Getting the "correct" month is probably not possible. I have 201251. The record AN has says that it was the 25th bike built Jan 4, 1972. The certification label says Dec 1971. So, is Dec 71 or Jan 72 "correct"?

I also have a 74 that has a certification label date 2 months before it came off the assembly line - here's part of a email conversion with AN: "The records state that your bike 320691 came ‘off track’ in October 1974 and was despatched from the factory in November 1974. That it was stamped 8/74 due, for reasons unknown to us."

Is it possible that when engines and frames were mated the ID tags were attached and the assembly put aside and completed at a later date? Maybe this was done in "batches" and pulled in a random or LIFO fashion to be put "on the line" for completion?
That might account for the date on the tags being much earlier than the "dispatch" date.

Anything possible ... mine is stamped 207384 APR 1972 .... looks like maybe not put together in numeric order ....

The December 9th 1971 factory record for mine shows the previous day there was a build way out of numerical sequence.
