And so it begins

But nobody needs 'three square' burials a day :)

(Just the one, I believe)
That's a weird thing to think about. Generally, it's quite a while between the deaths of people we know, but there are about 128 deaths/minute in the world and about 5 deaths/minute in the US.

Arlington cemetery averages 25 burials/day.

On the contrary, the normal reactors produce extremely "hot" waste that lasts a VERY, VERY long time. Breeder reactors are very different. I know wiki's are not perfect, but this is an interesting read:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breeder_reactor

On your second point:

Just think of some of the presidents of late:
1st job, Governor, 2nd President
1st job, Senator, 2nd President
Lawyer for about 2 years, Senator for about 48 years, President

Those resumes don't strike me as people even able to understand the advice of their advisors on science, technology, economics, etc.

Sorry, Greg, I am not convinced.
I have reviewed the reference you provided, and have learned a lot. Mainly, I have learned that nuclear power plant design has come a long way from the early 70's, when I researched LMFBR's (liquid metal fast breeder reactors) for Senator John Tower R-TX.

Depending on design, the wastes may be mitigated by a factor of 100, but not eliminated. The accident potential remains the same as light water reactors. The sodium cooled designs introduce a new risk factor, if the core cooling sodium should come into contact with the water used for steam, the resulting explosion will obliterate the core. Perhaps in a few more decades, the concept may mature to a safe alternative.

Regarding your second argument, it is very lame ..... one of your examples picked Solindra as a winner, and another cannot find his way off a podium. Not to worry, it is the Congress (both houses) that pick the winners and losers, and their win/loss record would get them fired if they managed a sports team.

Slick

Don't get me wrong - I'm not convinced that we are ready to handle much - we do way too much with blinders on. If you listen to all you'll find that these are all bad ways to power the nation:
Hydroelectric (hurts fish and water supplies)
Wind (kills birds and to some is ugly)
Solar (destroys the ecosystem of large areas)
Coal (bad for air quality)
Oil (almost as bad as coal)
Current Nuclear (we will probably not outlive the waste and we have no surefire way to store it)
Breeder Reactors (still not waste free, let keep using 100 times worse and let's keep searching for fuel to run the existing plants)
Natural Gas (my God are you crazy, it's a fossil fuel and we only have a 500 year supply)
Fusion (not there yet and if we were people would surely be against "having a Sun on Earth")

I don't know who Solindra is or how what I said picked anyone as a winner - they are all winning losers to me! Bill Clinton was Governor of AR as his first actual job. Barak Obama's first actual job was as a Senator, and we know who the bumbler in Chief is! I don't t think any of them had the knowledge and experience to be anything other than a know-nothing political pawn of the system.

I noticed that our most recent former president, real-estate developer, game show host, President was not on the list. Is that to imply he was able to understand his advisors on science, technology, economics, etc.?

Probably on economics, doubtful on science and technology, but at least he had experience as an executive. Honestly, if I got to be King I don't think I would have hired most of them in my lifetime to do the job!

Don't you mean your next leader ?

When you vote, you get to select from a very narrow list of choices. You may write in a name but good luck with that. If everyone wrote in the same name and he was a real person "they" still would not allow him to take office. But my point is, in the last election, you had a clear choice between an odd loud mouth and a quiet dementia sufferer. That was your choice. It says little for the majority of the citizenry that they made the choice they made. If that is the situation it is tough to blame all our current woes on politicians. Just to be fair, in the UK nobody gets to vote for the PM. Think about that...

A great solution would be to change the election process to ANYONE can run, but only the top 10 vote-getters in the Primaries, get to be on the ballot in November.

Then, the entire country can pick from the top 10 people in the entire nation that were chosen from a MUCH wider field, with no 2-party entrenched mob pick (or at least not ONLY the mob's pick)

Labor is a commodity, pure and simple and is beholden to supply and demand principles

What you want is to be in a field that has high demand and low supply

High supply and low demand is a poor career choice

Yes I agree
This has always been the case
What point are you making?

What's the point of this thread?

This post has a non generic focus on the catastrophic monetary collapse (recession) and not just of your once great nation due to bad business decisions or dare I say the blatant managed decline of many manufacturing industries that have for instance been relocated off shore or energy supply that has almost been completely shut down... coupled with the likes of your Larry Fink (Black rock) that has invested Billions apon billions of U.S pension funds with Chinese contruction companys that have recently been shut down by the Chinese government but also the global inpact heading for us all...Where are those pension funds now....I'll tell you ...gone for good.
Your comment (supply/ demand) has yet to enlighten me either. ?
We are not trying to re invent the wheel ..its called a general perspective discussion

And here we go with the politics of the uninformed. Obama was a State Senator before he was a US Senator and a civil rights lawyer before that.
Wind power killing birds. Solar destroying the ecosystem. Did you have your tinfoil hat on when you discovered these talking points?
This is why Jerry banned politics and why this thread will be in the can soon. According to Greg, there are no good ways to power the nation.

Not at all what I said. Read again - those are the claims you hear.

One excellent way until we can sort out something better is natural gas. Another is breeder reactors, but we are so scared of nuclear power we aren't developing them. Another might be geothermal. Another might be ocean wave power. The best would probably be solar, but the technology is not there yet to power a nation.

The basis for this entire worldwide economic damage is squarely on the shoulders of out-of-control, bloated, drunk government.

NOT JUST THE USA.

Biological weaponry only opened Pandora's Box; the contents of that box have been growing for decades, fueled by hard-working innocent citizens' tax dollars.

The time for sunlight is NOW. That, or there will be no peace on Earth for the foreseeable future.
……and don’t forget Putin…..
