Just been told at work that all overtime will be stopped from Monday for the foreseeable
Most of our work is new build offices
Very little work has come in the drawing office for the last 2 years or so
Big offices in the square mile were our bread n butter work
Who needs them now?
As we work 2 years in advance on most projects this is no surprise
I feel sorry for the younger blokes one of them I know already uses a food bank
Once he's paid the rent ,put fuel in his car etc he still needs to feed his kids
I have been in a similar position myself but nowhere near as bad
Oh well

I've just watched the news ... wall to wall doom and gloom ... UK forecast to have the longest recession for a century.

I guess it's worldwide.

Very sad for all our children.

The basis for this entire worldwide economic damage is squarely on the shoulders of out-of-control, bloated, drunk government.

NOT JUST THE USA.

Biological weaponry only opened Pandora's Box; the contents of that box have been growing for decades, fueled by hard-working innocent citizens' tax dollars.

The time for sunlight is NOW. That, or there will be no peace on Earth for the foreseeable future.

Not really, it's due to a very efficient global supply chain. When there's disruptions to that (i.e. more or less or demand than expected) then the supply side can't quickly adjust. The pandemic fundamentally impacted the supply chain and it will take time for it to equalize. There's not much the big bad government can do about it, unless you want them to take over production but i doubt anyone wants that (outside of N. Korea :))

But IRT to the big bad government, what's specifically bloated and out of control? You may want to do a little research there before espousing generalities. I'm all for being critical on spending (and the government should be accountable), but most don't understand what they are criticizing.

Certainly there are no easy solutions that are readily apparent.

Tough times are more manageable with stable family nearby to assist. That's how our family has always gotten by (both myself when I was younger, and my kids not too long ago)

I'd imagine it's great to have family nearby
I have never had that myself

I'm very sorry that is the case for you, as for many people everywhere. It is a very nice feeling, and I hope that changes for you, somehow,

Don't get me wrong I have no mortgage or kids at home anymore
It's the younger blokes I work with I feel for
I have only 5 years until retirement
I'll get by , I've done it before but looking around it's just plain grim

It would be grossly unfair for me to generalise, but stuck in a car with a young girl from our office she readily admits her generation want the 'work/life' balance from the get go, and not prepared to do more than the minimum necessary to achieve it.
Happy to buy coffee at £4-5 a cup though, and pay £20 to have the car washed!!
Different generation, different outlook....

I've been warning young tradesman that hard times are coming and not to financially commit yourself to unusual expenditure....what do they do ...get in major hock with a brand new utility or what EstuaryBoy said about spending money like it grows on trees...
I say to them...The financial commitment or budget for your next vehicle is what your ego will allow you to drive...they got big egos these days unfortunately for them
