AMC Clutch springs

Has anyone got a source for uprated clutch springs? I'm running an AMC three spring clutch on my Atlas/Commando hybrid and it slips unless I wind the springs in until they're just off coil bound.

A set of heavy duty springs would be good but I can't seem to find any listed by the usual dealers.

Thanks

john

PS, a belt drive with a decent clutch is the next stage, but funds don't permit it just yet.

Have you tried running Ford ATF in the chain case rather than oil? Oil or ATF is bound to soak the plates, but friction with ATF is said to be 35% greater than oil.

Atlas/Commando hybrid..... You must be pulling some horsepower....my slightly warmed up Atlas (770 cc) does not slip with spring nuts flush with stud tops. This type clutch is probably over its design limits with a 750 engine.

You must also have a strong wrist if you can pull the lever in with spring nuts tightened as much as you say.

It is possible to fit a Cdo diaphragm type clutch to an Atlas gearbox main shaft. Maybe that is an option for you.

Good luck on your search....I have not heard of HD springs for the AMC clutch.

PS..... any chance your springs have lost their tension due to extreme heat?

I'm running it dry so the ATF isn't the issue.

It's my ex race bike but I've de tuned it a bit by lowering the compression, but yes the clutch is probably well outside its design parameters.

The issue with a strong wrist is observant of you, but when I was racing it I did clutchless changes most of the time so wrist fatigue was not a problem, now I'm riding through traffic it's getting difficult.

Maybe the belt drive should be on my Christmas list, but I can't see the Mrs buying me one :)

This is my technique to get what I want for Christmas, and birthday:

Buy what I want....wrap it....put a card on it labeled "To (my name) - From (her name)" .... tell her she's covered and doesn't have to shop for me. She will be appreciative of that.

The worst thing you can do is tell her what it costs....women have an innate $10:1 GEF (gift exchange factor)

I'm getting a new tool box and set of Whitworth spanners this year.

PS: act surprised when you open the gift(s) with other family members present

My 650SS clutch started to slip after Herb Becker reshaped the intake ports "the way we do them for the Commando race engines" (ie Doug Mcrae's bike) Herb said the clutch held fine before the porting work.
I tried new springs, new plates and dry running, but it would still slip once then engine hit 4 k. I finally gave in and fitted a Newby belt drive and clutch plus Dynodave pushrod seal. This cured the problem and also got rid of the primary cover oil leakage problem.
As far as the clutch is concerned, I wonder now if the pushrod seal was all that was needed. If even a little bit of gear oil can migrate onto one or more of the plates, slippage is certain to occur.
