Hi everyone finally got the dosh to order my carbs for the 1966 650 ss straddles the dates od the switchover
Was considering the new premier amal concentrics but read somewhere some one was using the 928's instead of the 930s anyone tried the premiers?
Or do I go for monoblocs

Defo after twin carbs and shes going to be ridden not a show queen
What you all running :)

Massive thanks in advance

Tom

Tom, my 68 has the 930 amals it came with, although they have been sleeved due to slide wear. These carbs work well on the 650ss, even though it seems like two thirty mm carbs ought to be too much for a little 650.
If I had Monoblocks on hand, as you do, I would rebuild them as needed and use them. There is nothing wrong with Monoblocks and, if nothing else, they are more interesting to look at than Concentrics.

Hi glen :) thanks for the reply good to hear about the 930'sim actually missing one 376 and the chopped.one has no slide or jets in it

So going to be a brand spank set while I've scraped the money together :) then just.got to fix the forks :)

from factory the 650SS fitted with monoblocs used an inlet manifold sleeve which reduced the manfold by 2mm from memory 28mm dowm to 26mm, i.e. the monobloc has a 26mm throat.

If you have a choice of carb sizes, like for different years of the same model, a good rule of thumb is to go for the smaller one.

I'm sure this has been covered before, but what do the sleeves do to the power characteristics ?
More torque lower down the rev range ?

Anyone seen, or measured, the differences ?
Did all 650SS have them ?

deffernately used untill the introduction of concentics but i will have to study the parts book to see if they were used with concentrics. small ports increase torque.

At low rpm, or at max rpm though ??

There comes a point where more flow equals more torque...

On the other hand I have a 68 650ss which has the largest carbs fitted to the 650, the 30mm concentrics, and it goes like a bat out of hell. Slow running is smooth, not the low end torque of the 850 Commando of course, but very tractible. When it gets on the pipe from about 3500 to 6500 it feels as though it would give the Commando a hard time.
