Hi Guys
On Premier carbs as I'm sure you know are fitted with a removeable pilot jet (opposite to the pilot air screw)
These jet are mounted inboard so nothing can be done with them once both carbs are fitted.
So My Question... Should these be screwed right home, backed off an amount, head of the cross head jet flush with the casting???
Mine came with one backed off 1/4 from fully in & the other had the head of the jet flush with the casting....
This needs to be right, as once fitted your screwed... pardon the pun.
In addition on a 750 with high performance air filter, what jet size should these be>>

Screwed fully home as the Premier pilot jet isn't screw-adjustable

17's work well in my 72 750 with K&N filter and standard peashooters. My 74 850 also with K&N filter and 750 unbalanced peashooters seems to like the 19's better. You may have to try both. As LAB says bottom the jet to snug but not over tite.
 
Has anyone tried to modify an old Amal to use the new Premier pilot jet?

I have done that, will post the details later.

Notes are gone, but

1. I drilled a 4mm hole in on the blanked side making sure I did not go into the passageway and drill the other side, the other side is where the taper on the other end of the new pilot jet seats and you need a seal, accidentally drill it out to 4mm and it may not seal.

2. From the pilot screw side I knocked out the pilot bush so it exited through the new 4mm hole.

3. Then went back over to the 4mm hole side and using a end mill opened out the first 8.85mm to 1/4", this is the area the new pilot jet O ring seals onto.

4. Tapped the remainder of the 4mm hole to 2BA thread.

5. A good clean out.

6. Screwed in new pilot jet, it goes in so it is just slightly proud.

I added them on already, if doing this on a Drill Press and not a Vertical Mill then do steps 1 followed by 3 before doing 2 so you can do the two diameters concentric. I have DRO on the mill and can return easily to previous positions so can mix it up easier.
 
Does anyone know what the thread is on the Premier pilot jet , It seems to be 3/16 - 32 TPI whatever that might be.

I have a brand new carburetor with a bodgy thread out of the box and will have to find a tap and hope it can be saved.
As a bonus they are #17's and two replacement #19's will be over $70, that's if the thread can be repaired.

I'm not sure you could Helicoil that thread even as a last resort.
