I recently tore down my Amal on my 500t and and having trouble getting my carb setting correct. Not really sure how to adjust them and what adjustment is what. If anyone could shine light on where to start that would be great.

Did it run OK before ?
The carb adjustment is exactly as for one carb on a commando, even if the carb is a different type.

The adjustment with the T-handle raises or lowers the slide stop,
and the mixture screw regulates the AIR to give a nice even slow idle.

As per the manual, the mixture idle screw is usually about one and a half turns out, and you set it in conjunction with raising/lowering the slide.
Best done with the engine warm - although you need to get it in the ballpark to be able to get it warm !
If it won't start, try lowering (or raising) the slide stop until it will start.
If cold, it will usually need a good tickle to raise the fuel level so something will happen when you kick it over.
But you knew that already.....

Nice looking cycle (again), don't see them every day...

I had figured as much, it starts on first kick but pops, bangs, pretty much everything but smooth. Just wasn't sure if I was doing something wrong? It might not be fuel has been sitting awhile. I will try replacing the plug. Would there be a way to check (what i believe) the timing advance to see if it is sticking when i cable operate it?? (can that happen??) Also what is the lever on the handle bar, it is under the left grip - up & down movement? compression release? <--- cable goes to exhaust rocker area assuming it is a compression release.

RE; "up & down movement? compression release? " pull vever up for compression release, also useful for stopping engine.

Simple, remove the magneto cover, and move lever whilst observing movement of point cam ring moving round. HTH

Thanks Bernhard. Im currently on my way to Mid-O so i will check this out tomorrow and will replace plug also. Thanks for the help

Well I got a new plug... And I find I'm shooting oil and combustion out. Can actually see while running... So my new question is. Where can I find a new gasket set. And possibly piston and rings. Are the 500cc es2 able to be used? Again any help would be great.

ES2 parts could possibly fit - but don't forget you have an alloy top end,
and quite how different that makes them I don't know, never having seen an early one like that in the metal.

Some engines had the head joint ground to the cylinder, using valve grinding paste etc.
Some folks swear by this.
You'll have to investigate your engine, sometimes things are in the way to prevent enough circular motion to grind them together.
Remove ALL paste when finished, of course.
The gray band tells you when you have flat contact all the way around.

Somewhere like Mike Walridge just may have parts ?, and RGM may have some too.
The 500T are fairly uncommon, so you may have to really hunt to find stuff.

The gaskets are fairly simple, so a ball peine hammer and gasket material to make your own.

Yeah I honestly am at a loss with this bike. I consider myself a novice so might be more then I can handle. This winter I will tear it down and hopefully get some things to work together and maybe have a freshly rebuilt bike. Thanks for the help - only time I wish that this wasn't an uncommon bike...

Stick with it, its only a matter of figuring out what it needs, and then feeding it what it wants.
And no-one is born knowing this, its all just finding out.
Which is where half the fun is...

Certainly an interesting model, competition derived, be great for tootling around town and for shows etc.

Was thinking of the general paper/cardboard gaskets for this = not head gaskets or head gasket material.

Some ES2 had a thin aluminium sheet head gasket - can almost be cut out with heavy scissors and a coke can and a few drilled holes.
Its the little oil flow holes that may need to be sealed between head and cylinder, depending on how this model did them.
Are both your head and cylinder Wellworthy items ?

I believe the cylinder and head is "wellworthy" but no idea until i take it apart. I have an ES2 engine minus the head that i may steal parts from when i get time to pull apart the 500t. My commando still needs carbs and forks so all my spare money that the wife lets me spend is going towards that right now. I will be asking more questions when i get to it this winter, if all else fails i will have a clean new frame and paint so it will look good sitting in the garage at least.

On the post 48 engine the bore and head fit with a raised spigot that's lightly ground to make a seal. This only seals the head and bore, the gasket seals the oil drain running though the fins.

Sounds like a plan. Many a classic and exotic has survived and thrived this way.
And as you work your way through it, all becomes explained and clearer,
so when done you know all the inner workings.
That bub looks expensive, good luck on all fronts !

Re; “cylinder and head is "well worthy"
If one or both are made by Wellworthy they will be made from alloy, if they are cast iron, a magnet will confirm this
