Hi the Amal carbs on my 850 are starting to show weir on the slides just replaced the air filter the old one was all choked up is there merit in running some upper cylinder lubrication in the fuel to prolong the life of the carbs I will be looking at asset of Amal Premiers one day.

Slides should not really get lubricated by fuel as engine is running so i would say save the money you would have spent on fuel additive to go towards new Premiers.

When I junked the worn out Amals on mine, I got a good price for them on ebay. I was completely honest about them and their condition. Why the pair were worth £70 to anyone I don't know, but I accepted the cash and they were pleased with the purchase.

Mike, if the carbs are old, I would do nothing as long as it's idling and running good. If the carbs are nearly new and you see the first wear, you can prolong life by fitting the anodised slides.

Anodized slides are OK, but do not fall into the trap of buying chromed slides.

I tried to extend the life of my original Amals until a little bit of slide broke off, luckily the engine just spat it out but convinced me that its false economy to persevere with knackered carbs, new premiers are now waiting to be put on.

Well that depends on what kind of chromed slides: Amal chromed zinc/alloy slides are not much better but chromed brass slides are very durable compared with standard zinc/alloy slides.

Mikunis have chromed brass slides and they never show any wear.

SOME Miks, some are anodized aluminum.

My earlier chromed Mik. showed wear. Brass slleeved Amal good to go.
