Amal Carb question

While looking through the service manual under carburetors I read for the Combat 932 amal the main jet to be #230 but listed next to that (220 with mute). Refresh my gray matter on the term 'mute'?
Do they mean spray tube or muted exhaust? Thanks,,,,,,,

The mute was a restriction tube fitted in the end of some Pea Shooters for the American market to reduce noise levels.

After I asked the question I examined the carbs I'm going to use and found # 220 main's and not the # 230. The needle clip was in the middle groove. The mufflers however were aftermarket peashooters without any sort of mute....... :roll:

I have the original mutes and main jets that came in a little bag with my new bike. I'm running the 230s that came in the carbs. I did try the mutes once with rejetting and the bike ran like crap. The mutes killed the performance and the exhaust sound.

If more info needed on the mutes I will dig them out and take a picture. They look like a small automotive freeze plug (chromed) with a hole about the size of a dime to allow the exhaust out. These were each held in with a single self tapping screw through a small hole in the side of the outlet of the peashooters. The effect is similar to the old "Snuff-or-nots".

Also in the Riders manual there was an addendum sheet pasted in which shows (I think) the difference in jet sizes and needle positions when using the mutes.

I wish I could get a picture of the mutes in my original pea shooters for the 'S'. It blocked about 80% of the central tube just about at the widest part of my silencers. The carbs had 240 mains and 106 needles, book recommends 220 and 107. It always ran fine though. We'll see when I get this thing on the road in the spring, but the little I did have it out, it was running strong and nothing strange about the throttle response.

Actually I can get a picture, here it is, you can see the strap that holds it is broken on one side.
