Can anyone tell me if there is a upgraded aftermarket filter element for the stock MKIII airbox? I wouldn't ming getting a K&N clamp-on setup, but it looks like you have to remove the engine to get the box out... yikes! Or is there a secret trick I'm not seeing?

Maybe the Mk III is different but I didn't have to remove the engine to jettison the airbox on my Mk I.

Yes it appears as if the MK III frame was built around the airbox . I haven't actually tried to remove the one on one of my Mk III.s . I plan to trade that bike for a full-on engine/trans rebuild on my other one that already had the stock airbox removed when I got it . I'll ask my guru tomorrow if and how you get the airbox off without taking the whole bike apart . FWIW he says that it actaully makes a quite good still airbox ,but it's just too much trouble for me to deal with . It took me nearly an hour to replace the boots between the carbs and airbox on that bike . The whole time I was thinking that all I had to do on the other bike was install K and N filter, tighten two hose clamps , move on to next project . Not to mention all of the extra storage room you gain under the seat from the space taken up by that monster airbox .

Not that I'm aware of?

You would at least have to remove the carbs and inlet manifolds in order to get the airbox out.

Thanks, that's what I figured. I just thought I would ask before I drop $50 on a sponge for the stock airbox.

Having removed all other components from the frame, how you remove the Mk111 airbox depends upon your geographical location.

If you're in the U.S. then you'll need to beat it into submission with a baseball bat.

The English can choose between a cricket bat (if they're posh) or a pick-axe handle if they're a bit rough and ready like me.

Be prepared to get really angry with it ! :D

I just hacksawed the last one out, well it annoyed me and it deserved it!

You can fit the 750, early 850 perforated type if you prefer. The holes in the battery carrier are a slightly different distance apart, and so the back plate of the early air filter will need re-drilling where it mounts onto the carrier, on just one of the two holes I think. Also the earlier filter mounted on the MK3 battery carrier has a slight tilt forwards (at the bottom as far as I can remember) but it's not noticeable.

Just another option for you? I have done this on mine.
