I recently purchased a used front brake caliper on EBay. It’s in generally good shape, except the pistons show some minor pitting. I’m guessing they are the original chrome plated steel part. I’m figuring I should replace these with a set of new stainless steel pistons. Looking on eBay, I see the prices for replacement SS pistons runs anywhere from $35 to $70. Has anyone here purchased the cheaper aftermarket pistons? Is there any reason to spend $70 on a set of “genuine” Norton pistons?

When I rebuilt mine with SS pistons , braided hose etc. got all my parts needed fro britcycle , e-bay can have iffy quality and prices don’t reflect that ….

A couple years ago I used the SS pistons from The Bonneville Shop with new hose and M/C kit. Changed to DOT 5 brake fluid, which some say is a no-no and all is well.. A yes from me on the SS pistons.

I used the SS caliper pistons from RGM. Good quality and a good fit. The steel pistons I took out were in a really bad state, so another yes for SS pistons.

The cheaper ones will most likely be missing the machined reliefs so the fluid will not be able to get behind the pistons to push them out when installed fully retracted.

never seen a piston with machined reliefs on the rear they do have a slight step on the face ?

in this age of CNC machinery it is easy to replicate these pistons lots of small engineering shops can produce stainless parts to a very high standard

I got the ones with the internal threaded bosses (for removal) they seemed like a very tight fit with new AN seals.

The way to avoid the problem of the inner piston blanking off its drilling is to install it only as far as necessary to fit the pad, not press it all the way in.
