I replaced the rear tire of my 1971 Norton Commando and took it for a spin last night. After driving about a mile I smelled burning brakes coming from the rear wheel. What could I have done to mess up the rear brakes? Removing the tire was as easy as removing one bolt, a spacer and the speedo. Couldn't believe how easy it was. Any ideas what I did wrong?

So is the brake binding, have you checked for free-play at the cable/operating lever? If you slackened the left-hand axle nut did you centralise the back-plate before re-tightening it?
Dave.

Did you make sure the axle was hard up against the chain aduster as you did the final tightening, thats not to say it was right in the first place but it could be enough out of line to affect the freeplay between lining and drum. Regardless adjust the brake lever so there is more freeplay of the pedal before the brake linings touch the drum, also undo the axle nut on the brake side and operate the brake as you retighten the nut and this will centralise the shoes within the drum.
