72 commando, my 1st bike. i need to replace front tire. f and rear are dunlop tt100's. rear looks almost hew , rubberis pliable. went to the local shop and they informed me that tire is no longer made. they reccommended an avon at 159 bucks. thought i'd check here for suggestions. i'd like a safe, good handling tire w/ reasonable longevity. thanx, rick

I fitted Avon26 Roadriders on the recommendation of forum members and am well satisfied. I ordered them from American Moto tire for about 72 US each and I think 20 or 25 for postage.

hi rg,theres a thread on page 4 here regarding avon tyers, personally i dont think its a good idea mixing tyers ,it may cause handling or instability problems, be better to fit a pair of avons,i know thats going to double your costs but it will be worth it in the long run

Don't know where you are but in the USA there is no problem getting Dunlop TT100s. I just changed my rear to match my front with TT100s even though I am thinking of going to Avons next time when both front and rear wear out together.

I think the Dunlop Tyre Co. would be surprised to hear they no longer make the TT100! http://www.dunlopmotorcycle.co.uk/tyres ... /k81TT100/

Even if they are made in Japan these days, unlike Avon motorcycle tyres that are still made in the UK.

"No longer made" is usually a translation for "We don't want to order one for you".

I don't know how much mure they cost over there, ut I went from TT100's to Bridgestone Battlax's.
You will not regret it if you put those on. They transformed my bike. HUGE difference in handling/secured feeling/cornering.

I don't know if you like the "flickability" of the smaller tires on the front, but I got a Avon SpeedMaster in 300x19 from Walridge in CAN for a decent price and it looks just like the original, but the pattern is a bit different but not noticeable.

i'll spring for the avons. found a pair of 100 90 v19's for 83.61 a copy. the shop that told me of the demise of the tt 100 is a harley shop. i told him k81 today and he told me 140. so sorry! they want 35 dollars to mount 1 tire. gotta shop that around. thanks for the help, rick in southern indiana where the sun showed it's face today for the 1st time in a fortnight

I run the Bridgestone Battleax BT-45s too, on the advice of Sir Matt Rambow of CNW. Been well pleased with 'em.

Stick with the dunlop if you only want to replace the front one & use the same size as the back one, is you are using same size rims. Or BT45's front & rear, the same size on front & rear.
I cannot get on with Avon's, so much so, that if I bought a bike with them on, I would replace them straight away. I have had awful handling problems with them. They are alright at low speed, but I tend to thrash mine when I get the chance.

But have you tried Avon Roadriders yet? As I've only ever heard good reports from those who have used them.

Yes, but I had a 100=90 on the front & 110-90 on the back. At fast speeds it would weave. Swopped them for the same sizes with BT45's & it was a hell of lot better. I have recently put a 110-90 on the front & it has got rid of the high speed weave completely. Still get weaving a bit on high speed corners, I am using 18" rims which is probably adding to it. Trying a few other things at the moment.
Putting a smaller tyre on the front upsets the trail which affects high speed stability. You would not notice it two up, only when riding solo.

Are you certain it's a tire issue? Isolastics in good shape and shimmed/adjusted properly? Headsteady mounts in good nick (no broken rubber buffers if you are still using the stock headsteady)? Swingarm bushings? Swingarm tube mount in cradle worn? Wheels in alignment?

I've never had that problem with K81's or Avon AM26's. I don't baby mine either.

I, too, did have a high speed wobble. I went through every thing. New swing arm bushing, reamed cradle and installed oversize spindle, isolastics, head steady. Installed a steering stabilizer. All to no avail. Eventually I replaced the rear tire. Viola! Problem solved. The tire I replaced was an Avon Super Venom. Replaced it with a like Avon Super Venom. It possibly could of been a mounting issue.

Everything on the bike is in perfect nick. A friend & I both had our 18" rims built on ay the same time, & both put on Avon Roadrunners, 100-90 front & 110-90 back. We both had excactly the same problem. He changed his for Supervenoms of the same size & changed his headsteady for a norvil one. He improved it a great deal, but not completely.
I have replaced my front tyre to a 110-90 & just put a Norman White headsteady on. I have just been for 50 mile trip, one up, & it now seems good.
I was having a conversation about Tyres with a couple of friends the other night, (in the pub of course), & the conclusion is to stick with a tyre that feels right for yourself.

And the moral of the story is...........stick to 19" rims. Avon Roadriders are the business. Even more so with 2.5" alloy rims like they were made for. Also, the wider the tyre for a given rim width, the more problems you will have.
