I adjusted the shifter on my 1973 850, so that my boot toe would make a better fit under the shifter....it was previously set too low....now, I have to roll bike a few feet before 1st gear's dogs will engage. Also, is it important to get the shift indicator pointer to accurately show which gear is engaged? Didn't think it was, when I moved the shifter a couple of splines, then retightened the indicator screw, the pointer moved from N to 2, when I did the adjustment while in Neutral....just left it that way....this only happens in first gear, all others are fine I have checked clutch, the lever was crammed down in the incorrect position, but I re-adjusted it
thanks

I'm not sure I understand your question.. changing the shift lever position shouldn't have any effect on gear engagement unless your toe can't move it far enough. Normal adjustment for the lever is straight across. The gear indicator pointer isn't all that accurate, so I set mine to point correctly in neutral.
