Here is a modification to my 1970 commando that is easy to do. I never liked the standard oil filter location near the wheel. I fabricated the bracket. The KN air filter gives you plenty of space.

Added an Oil Filter below the air filter

I DO LIKE THE CLEANER LINES OF A COMMANDO. SO HIDING THE FILTER UNDERNEATH IS MY FAVOURITE SPOT. EASY TO GET AT. AND WHEN YOU REMOVE IT, THE OIL GOES ON THE DECK AND NOT ALL OVER THE BIKE. I AM THE ULTIMATE QUICK FIXER. I LIKE MY BIKE TO BE AVAILABLE TO RIDE AT ALL TIMES, SO HAVENT TIME TO WAIT FOR THE OIL TO COMPLETELY DRAIN FROM THE FILTER BEFORE BINNING IT. I ALSO PREFER THE ORIGINAL AIR FILTER. IT SETS THE COMMANDO OFF AGAINST ALL THE OTHERS. TRIUMPHS ALWAYS LOOK TO ME AS IF THEY CHUCKED THEIR AIR FILTERS ON AS AN AFTER THOUGHT.

Baldy,

Don't you get oil coming out of that hole from the oil tank above that bracket? I've had to put a catch bottle on that hole, outside my original ham can. I did use some clamp on sponge filters on the carbs for a while, but I went back to the ham can. The catch bottle has stopped a lot of oil leakage, outside the crank case flange which I messed up last rebuild.

I like the big old airfilter as well. However I'd go with the old standby fix of a third through bolt near the bottom to pull in the end covers in that area. Otherwise you need to
use some kind of non-setting goo to seal the edge of the air filter element.
You do after to wonder what they were thinking plumbing the vent into the filter. Or rather you do know but you still have to deal with the mess it can bring on.

I have not seen any oil coming out of the vent hole yet but I can easily add a catch sponge or bottle. I realize the purists like their ham can air filters, but I just wanted to show an option for an oil filter mod that is easily reversible if you wanted to be back to stock. I just rebuilt the engine from the crank up so I wanted to protect my work with an oil filter.

I think you'll find that if you let the bike wet sump, you'll get oil out of that hole on startup. I can get about an ounce of oil out if it in my catch bottle when it sumps for a few weeks, and that ends up either in the air filter ham can or on the gearbox top which then leaks down to the bottom and when riding back to the horn area etc. I just found it a pain in the butt to have oil all over everything and did something about it. Just my opinion, not being critical. Although you may be one of the lucky ones that never has anything out of that hole, I've heard of it, but mostly from daily riders.

Yes i can see a big mess with that set up with your filter, its OK if you like spending time cleaning up a big mess.
