A question about motor sport

In the U.S., vintage racing (AHRMA) pays ZERO; it is a "pure" sport.

I don't agree with the way some of the classes are structured, either. Imagine a pushrod twin 650cc Triumph against an OHC transverse 4 Honda 750?

"Where is the fun in that?" you may ask. The fun is in being on famous tracks and having a go with the next guy who may not be quite as good a rider, and his "better" bike isn't enough to keep him in front of you.

It's a niche market, and a niche sport.

Who wants to watch motor sport on TV anyway. I went to Bathurst once when I lived in Sydney but have never watched it since. Moto GP is not that exciting to watch either.
We have a several road races here in NZ, none feature on the tele unless there is an 'incident' or Guy Martin is riding a Norton and winning. you can buy the Norton he rode on, its cheap  only 70k nz http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing ... =874531879
Classic bike racing is expensive to get into for young blokes ( at the pointy end), and over here its not a parade, but hey most of us have to go to work on Monday.
Quite a few Aussies come over here for the Barry Sheene weekend in October, its a great weekend.
As Rohan pointed out there are superstocks and we have Hysuong 250 series with limited mods.

Hyosung with limited mods ? - The best rules is no rules, however the dramatic differences in technology and engine capacity tend to stuff the racing. The best fun you can have is in beating a very good rider who has a very similar bike to your own. As far as I am concerned, I'd much rather race my commando based bike against air-cooled 851 Ducatis than against vastly over-capacity CB750 Hondas. The Hondas can still be beaten, however why would you bother ? They are basically 'point and squirt bikes whereas the strength of a commando usually lies in handling and getting the power down better, so the race lines are very different. The same applies to racing a commando against two strokes. My methanol fuelled T250 Suzuki would make my 850 commando look stupid in the same hands on a reasonably tight circuit.
One of the best classes we've had in Australia was 'supermono' - single cylinder four strokes - no other rules. The problem was that the really fast guys were those who raced with 700cc single cylinder dirt bike motors. They blew up quickly, so not many riders could afford to compete. All that was needed was a 500cc max capacity limit, the class would have been superb. There are still quite a few of the old supermono bikes around going cheap - there is no current way of using them.

An over capacity four cylinder Honda is a 'superbike' in the modern sense - no commando was ever that. Even a Laverda Jota is usually too much for a commando to contend with. Rocket threes and Tridents and 1000cc Vincents are enough in a class in which commandos race. This is the reason that Triumph and Norton twins are rarely raced in Australian historic races these days.
