A Hylomar question.

I've only used Blue Hylomar. It is overrated messy weird stuff. I found it difficult to lay down a thin even layer of it out of the tube. It worked on my timing side gasket that doesn't really need anything but a standard gasket to seal, but was a total fail on the wet primary. It might work as thread sealer. I don't really care for the stuff, because its so fiddly to apply.

I don't have any sealer on my Norton cases. They do not leak due to how well the crank case pressure is evacuated. And the cases have only been apart twice. That clear Hylomar would probably work if the case surfaces are good. Don't know though, because I have not used it.

For the generic wide flat metal to metal seals I know I might take apart again I use Versachem Mega Grey. Nothing fancy.

Only gasket maker type sealant I've used that works as advertised is Permatex Right Stuff, but it is a nightmare to take parts apart after using it. I had a cupped buffed out stainless Norton spindle end cap that leaked and used Right Stuff on it. Fixed the leak and I was able to run the motor seconds after using it. I use it primarily on Gen 1 SBC intake manifolds for the valley ends. I think about using it on my Norton wet primary cover, but it would be a lot of work to separate the inner and out covers after using it, so I've held off. Not recommending it for the Norton cases, but it holds stuff together and seals clean surfaces extremely well. I'm probably off topic by now.

I apply it by dabbing some on the surface or on my forefinger/thumb than spread it by dabbing it around the sealing surfaces. not trying to smear it along or get a thin smear right out the tube. It is more a gasket dresser than an actual gasket replacement. Great for helping to hold a gasket to a surface. I've used it on the rubber primary sealing ring to good effect as well. Excess easy to wipe away with a bit of brake cleaner.

This is all I've every used. Thin coat on both mating surfaces, wait a few minutes, assemble. Any that squeezes out is easily wiped off with denatured alcohol. If it gets too thick, thin with denatured alcohol. The Triumph 500 I built in 1972 still didn't leak when I took it part for a total rebuild and the mating surfaces cleaned up easily with denatured alcohol. Best I can tell they've never changed the formula. Under $10 at Amazon.

A Hylomar question.

I am with Greg Marsh above. I put my Atlas cases together with Permatex Av Form A Gasket way back in the early 70's. Not a drop of oil since.

Slick

Was looking for Wellseal in USA but does not seem to be available here, can be imported but at a ridiculous shipping price!

Started in the 1960s with Red and Green Hermetite then Golden Hermetite. Late 60s moved to Blue Hylomar for many years with no problems. Fast forward to the last 8 years at a Ducati Store before retirement, exclusively Ducati Threebond, grey and black. Watch the YouTube of an engine being built, Threebond applied by robot, perfect line and nobody runs a fat finger on it! Use it on everything now .
