961 - No Rear Brake

Hi all,

1st ride this year on my 2017 961 and when applying the rear brake nothing happened, the pedal bottoms out and absolutely no brake effect.

I had a spongy brake which was sorted at the 1st service, this was put down to air in the system from initial build, apparently it was a known issue because the brake pipes go up in to the ABS module under the seat and sometimes air gets trapped. Anyway before it was laid up last year the rear brake was fine, now i have no rear brake.

Before attempting this (as there is no Norton Service available at the moment) i need to know if i will get any ABS issues after bleeding the rear brake as i remember the Norton technician said the ABS had to be reset (presumably by software). The ABS is the Continental system.

The bike has only just over a 1000 miles on the clock.

Can anyone give me any advice please ?

Kind regards,

Ian

Mine is a 2018, not sure what the stickers are on my ABS unit but it says 'made in China' and resides under the seat hump, if yours is the same then you shouldn't have any issues bleeding the brake, just remember to take the rear caliper off and rotate it as that is where the air gets trapped (from personal experience).

Brake fluid doesn't evaporate so you should have had tell tale signs of fluid loss if you are suspecting that air has got into the system?

I recently had to bleed mine from the ABS unit as even turning the calliper upside down made no difference.

On mine you could hear a squelchy noise under the seat and the pedal bottomed out with no rear brake effect.
I undid the banjo very slightly whilst pressing the pedal and you could see lots of small bubbles coming out, when its was clear
fluid coming out the noise had gone and the brake works perfect again.

I wrapped lots of paper towel around the ABS unit but you are only using a tiny amount of fluid so it soaked it up easily.

Thanks for the replies guys, most helpful and will take it all on board. :)
