Hi everyone,
ok heres how i got hear. ive always had /built triumphs but always fancied a norton. So after being made redundant after 32 years and a few sovs in my pocket i take my chance. study the breed, do your homework, walk away theres always another one,.....yea right, iam a sucker for lost causes, Theres just something about dragging an old bike out of dark shed that i cant resist. So when i hear of one nearby thats been layed up scince the mid eighties off i went for a butchers .Price was fair and came with a good crop of spairs so heart rules head yet again. I load my car with the spares but cant get a van to get load the bike so i choose the hotest day of our way to breif summer to push it the 3 miles home, well i could do with some exercise . I had a couple of " is it for sale mate " offers on the way, which made me feel a bit more confident i hadnt bought a complete lemon.Anyway Right what have i got ,73 850 commando matching numbers home bike uk. well used at some time, strenghthed swing arm , rgm brake etc and plenty of bits missing but has potential. found this brilliant site and already found the knowledge available helpful. Hopefully the old beast will live again. should be some pics

I hear that. Parked mine in the warehouse at work and got 2 offers in the first 2 weeks of buying it. LOL
You've got a great deal of potential there. Good find.

Ain't Nortons great? ;)

Also, Futurama is outstanding. :D

Nice find. What serial number and date code is it. I am trying to place my date code, but am having a difficult time placing mine. Mine is 301517. it's a 1973, but I do not know the date code either late 72 or early 73. trying to find someone with a close bike number.

Mine is 305256. Titled as a '74, although Norvil says it's a '73, I believe.

It looks to be mostly there as far as the spendy bits.

"A diamond in the rough"...

As gradpaul said, all the major bits are there. You are missing carbs, but you have a lot of excellent options for those.

Carbs are easy, there's a set of 932s with intakes in the for sale section as we speak.

By the way, welcome to the forum!

I have never heard of anyone going from Norton to Triumph not coming back to Norton. Just sayin'.

numbers are 304103 and it says 1973 on the red vin plate. not sure what it started out as ?, i dont doubt its had a few deviations along the way most have by what ive seen on here, looking to go the way of a rideable updated bike rather than catalogue spec.

From what i've seen so far, I'm hoping yours is an April 1973. Does anyone know howmany bikes a month were being produced? I found a 312XXX that was a December 73 bike. Could it be that easy. That would make mine a January 73 bike. BUt I'm not 100% on that.

I'll have to double-check when I get home but I had a '74 that was built in Oct. '73 (308XXX).

EDIT: Yep. October 1973. I'd post a pic but only have the number plate as a negative. 308780.

I'm trying to recall from memory, but I think my tag said August 73, though the bike (305256) is titled as a '74.

My Mark 1 850 is a '73 and is No. 303800, if that's any help.
