Greetings . I was thinking of installing a 750S chain guard on my 850Mk1 for aesthetic reasons. From what I could tell it should be a bolt-up job with no mods. Has anyone on the forum done it or see any reason why it wouldn't fit ?. TIA

Those old chain guards seem to be getting real popular. But I don't know if it will go on an 850, but it mounts with the lower left shock bolt (special thin headed bolt) and a loop off the top of the swing arm way up front with a 1/4-28 x 1 3/4 (under the covered wire in the pic). It also held the chain oiler, but who uses that?

You'll need to make another special Norton tool to fit in the bracket to hold the shock bolt head, it's to thin for a standard spanner. I ground down a 9/16 and even had to grind off some of the edges to get it in there.

As for fitting any chainguard to any Commando swinging arm, as far as I am aware they are all interchangeable. The early models for the curved (06-0456 resp.06-1272) chainguards should take the later ones- the mounting points are identical.

These things were rare as hens teeth when I was looking for one. Only place I found them was finally at Burtons Bits, Norvil had one that was plain steel, as well as Walridge I think. Then there was some guy in TX or UK (they're so similar!), can't remember that was making SS ones, but now they are available nearly anywhere.

I guess old is good, kind of like me.
