Greetings,

Regarding restoration of my 69 Commando S with the blue metal flake color scheme, does anyone recall the original color of the Norton logo on the back of the seat? Also, what type of handlebar grips were supplied from the factory (e.g. Amal, Magura, Doherty, Grand Touring, etc.,)?

Thanks kindly!

hey, I got a norton book of amazon, its got a lot of info in it, its a hard cover book called Norton Commando , heres the link to it. Im not sure where i put it last so I cant look anything in it right now, but it goes from the early history of the bike and give you specs for almost everything.

Dear 71norton750,

Thanks, but I, too, have that book. It didn't help, regrettably.

Thank you!

I'm pretty sure mine had the original seat cover when I got it and the logo was in silver. I can't help you with the grips though.

Can't remember the brand of grips, but they were very thin with a crosshatch pattern. I qwickly replaced them with "titty grips"

These sound like the Verlicchi grips for Ducatis - although the pattern is different from mine, they're available in the US...

From Italy with the right pattern (note they're open ended for clip-ons, closed ended ones are also available)

And from Canada (Wolfgang is a great guy to deal with)

What about some photos of the restoration?

The logo on the back seat of my Apr 69S Fireflake Blue has a silver logo and the plastic silver band around the bottom. But Mike at Walridge says that is not original, he said there was no logo, I really don't know but don't have any reason to believe I didn't get the original seat with the bike. I got a repro cover from Mike and it looks right except the bands were 1.2" wide instead of 1.5". I bought it in Apr 72 and think I am the 2nd owner. The grips I got with it may have been replaced, don't know but they are Brevettata Granturismo and look like this.

I rather liked them.

The bulbous grips seem to have come in for 1971. Prior to that the grips were thin and shiny and look like the standard (Britax ?) grips that were fitted to Nortons through the late 1960s.

It's difficult to see exactly in the brochure pictures.

Yes, I think 79x100 is right. In the "commando Spares list" book the grips look straight and hard. They are listed as H1 16-069 Plastic dummy grip and H3 016658 Twist Grip Assembled and look just like the brochure grips.

I did find a new set of the Brevettata grips at Vintage Cosmo and bought a set for $17.

My 70 S had a really faded white logo on the rear seat which i believe may have been original , i had a signwriter do me a stencil and have since made it white again.
Grips which i also believe were original were skinny hard black

My 69S has a faded gold logo on the seat. I think this is the original seat.

you could well be right, my really faded white logo may have actually been gold faded come to think back. I have vague memories of asking on the forum about gold logos, but ended up doing mine in old white as i thought it looked better

Yep, genuine original Italian Brevettata Gran Turismo grips - not the "genuine" Beston ones being sold on ebay...

Paul,
You realize this thread is 4 years old? Anyhow to set it all straight, the 69/70 S had a gold norton logo on the rear of the seat, drjean had a picture of his S back in the day from the rear. And I did find some new Brevettata Granturismo which I put on my restoration. The factory grips were hard and straight.

I researched the seat logo color a few years back as mine was faded away, I cant recall where I got the info but it was actualy gold, The grips are hard straight on the 69
