Hi there,

I am trying to find out about the battery trays and oil tanks from a 1970 Roadster (not an 'S' type). I understand there basically exactly the same as the 'S' types besides the high pipes, i was just wanted to confirm with others who may know is the oil tank and batter tray exactly the same too, i just need to check as i proceed with mine as im not sure if it has the wrong one on or not????

Thanks heaps all!

Adam 1970 model year [which started approx august 1969] and was the first roadster [not R] it was an S with low pipes, post a picture of your oil tank and some one will tell you if it is correct or not, as you are allready aware there is a lot of helpfull people on this forum.

Thanks Al, i will try to do it tomorrow as ive never posted a pic but i guess it cant be hard if everyone else does it. Im pretty sure it has the wrong oil tank on it then for some reason but il take a photo and post tomorrow, thanks!

Here's a link to the early 69/70 battery tray/oil tank detail.

I am not sure when they started going to the sideways tray, maybe late 70? The records I have indicate that they started making the S in March 69, #131297 (mine is 132031, Apr 69), Roadster in May of 70, #135140,, the last S was June of 70 #135088, and the start of the Roadster MK II in Jan of 71, #142583. I can't guarantee any of this info with certainty, just a list I found a long time ago.

hey Dvae thanks for the link i had seen that it helped a lot, im gonna post a pic later on today but im sure i have the wrong type but i guess a pic will confirm what needs to be done. So Dave do think the 69 s type and 1970 roadster had the same battery tray and oil tank, i think thats what ur saying (thats what im thinking is correct too)?

Thanks heaps
Adam

Yes, I'm thinking the S and 70 Roadster had the same battery tray until the 71 model came out, actually just about everything on the S and the pre-71 Roadster were the same except the exhaust. The front mudguard may have been a bit different too, but barely. The R and the original 67-68 Commando with a fastback type rear had the oil tank in the right panel. You should get the Commando Spares book, it shows some parts pictures, but not the R and S although it lists their parts as supplements. I'm not sure if they kept making the early fastback types when they started making the S or not, or they went from one model into the next as a sort of progression. Just don't know. There may have been things changed around at the dealers too, depending on what customers wanted. I can see that.

According to Roy Bacon ('Norton Twin Restoration' book) Commando (20M3S) 'S' model production commenced at serial 131257 (which tallies with the '69 parts book) in March '69, but Fastback (and R) production apparently continued in 20M3 (points behind barrels) form until serial 133668 in September '69 (by which time I think the R model had already been discontinued?)

I have a pic of my oil tank it is definately the wrong type (i think):

Im not sure if anyone can help me out but i found a serial number stamped directly onto the frame (no plate) where the forks connect to the frame

SN: 20117556 ? i tried doing some research but couldnt work it out exactly, thanks heaps!

the oil tankin your photo is 71 or later, the number could be 1966 atlas 20- 117xxx or is it a numer applied by local authorities for import/registration reasons.
Al

yeh im not sure at all about the numbers but im not worried, i dont think its a restamp by authorities here in Australia im pretty certain of that. Ill have to change that oil tank and battery box too although im not to sure about the battery box but im sure that must be different to? When i got it the previous owner had changed a few things here and there, done his own little mods, like one of the gauges was a norton green globe the other was from a triumph??? anyway il restore it back.
