I seem to be having trouble getting my rear wheel together. I had it apart for bearing replacement. I put the left side (single) bearing (10) in, the hub bearing spacer (9), felt and the lockring (14). Then I put in the inner sleeve (16) with the short shoulder on the single bearing side, the long shoulder on the double bearing side, pressed in the double bearing and installed the ring, felt and peened in the shouldered retaining washer (15). However now the inner sleeve is sticking out past the retaining washer on the drum side and the brake drum retaining hub (17) hits the inner sleeve and seems to bind everything up. Also the brake drum will not mount flush onto the hub (1) because the inner sleeve is holding the drum (and the brake drum retaining hub) out too far.

Is this just because I do not have everything mounted with the swingarm, or am I doing something wrong. It doesn't look right to me.

Dave,

I believe you just have the bearing spacer reversed. The long shoulder goes to the right side towards the speedo drive. I have constant trouble with this. If you seat the right bearing first and install the threaded locking ring and run it all the way down then install the spacer (long end first) and left bearing against it you should have the right spacing in the hub. This works for me.
Cheers!!

I found the problem. The brake drum mounts to the hub before you install the brake drum retaining hub (17).

My last post was incorrect. That didn't work either. Printertim, you have it right. I reversed the bearing spacer and put the long side into the single bearing, pressed the single bearing all the way in and installed the LH thread lockring and pressed in the double bearing until the slop in the spacer was taken up. That seems to work fine, now I can put the brake drum on, tighten it and it does not contact the brake drum retaining hub. All the books seem to have that spacer installed backwards. Apparently the double bearing is not pressed all the way in to contact the shoulder.

Thanks,
Dave

Great Dave...........I'm glad it worked for you. Next time you go to remove the bearings the extra space on the left allows you to drive the left bearing and spacer on into the hub to force out the right hand side bearing out (after removing the locking ring of course). Then in turn you have open access to drive the left side bearing back out.

Many Happy rides, my friend :D
