Hi can somebody tell me the difference between p/n 060619 68-70 R and fastback guard stay and p/n 25542 69-70 S and Roadster guard stay, and also the relevent guard bridges [measurements would be nice]
Thanks Al

My parts book lists the 'S' front stay as 25540A and the mudguard as 25542A and are the only different parts listed for the "Front Mudguard" section in the main part of the book which I think is for the pre-fastback. As near as I can tell, the 'S' stays are 1" shorter than others and the mudguard is also a bit of different shape especially from the 71 on. The bridge on the fender on the 'S' is 1" shorter than the 71 on, and am not sure about the 'pre-fastback', but then it is part of the fender, that is, the bridge is not listed separately. I think Norton shortened the stays for the 'S' to keep the mudguard from interfering with the exhaust headers under hard braking. I have never seen a 06.0619 stay so I can't speak to them. The 'R' and fastback stay is listed as 060619A and as either chrome or dull for the R. Here is a picture of the 25540A.

My bridge is out for powder coating, so I can't get any pics of that for the moment. My front mudguard and stays are going out for new chrome today.

I believe the difference in the Fastback (and 'R' model) fender stays vs the 'S' stays in '68-'70 was only color. The fastback stays were black while the 'S' stays were silver (some chrome?). Both used the smaller front tire (3.00-19 or 3.60-19 K81) and corresponding smaller front fender. The '71-'72 fender (and bridge) was larger to accomodate the 4.10 tire. The stays were also larger from '71 on. Of course, stainless fenders were introduced at some point in '72 and continued as standard from ''73 on.

Size-wise, there were only two different size stays. At least I have never seen anything other than two sizes in the last 37 years.

Thanks, Ron,

Here is a pic of my front mudguard before I ship it off. It is 25 1/4" tip to tip and the perpendicular measurement from the bottom of the mudguard to the inside top is 7 1/2" as measured in the picture.

The bridge measures 3 5/8" from the fender to the center of the holes as shown in this picture. The 71 on are 4 5/8".

Nelson assured me that the 71 on mudguards have a different curvature than the 69/70 and you cannot use the 69/70 stays with the 71 on mudguards even is you shorten the bridge to be like the 69/70 bridge.

Yep, you can't mix the early stuff for the small front tire and narrow fender with the late stuff. However, the '71-'72 chrome guard uses the same stays as the stainless fenders (4.10 front tire).

That being said, I have seen the early stays beat out enough to cram the 4.10 tire under, but there is almost no clearance. I sure would not recommend it.

Thanks Guys
I have 4 guard stays [same as daves photo] all without the "s" section type like fitted to my 850, though 3 are short and 1 is 1 inch longer, I assemled and mounted my guard last week but the guard would not fit using the 2 short stays and is a force fit using the long 1 to the rear, i have 2 bridges and have been useing the shorter of the 2 which has a mounting point one the right for the brake cable, thanks Dave fot the photos i will measure my bridge today.
regards Al

Hi All
I have measured my bridge and it is 1/2 an inch longer than Daves so maybe that explains the difference- i.e. 68 -70 fastbacks may use the longer stay with the 1/2 inch longer bridge ?. Anyway I now need make/modify a brige to the correct length.
Thanks Al

Norvil has the aluminum rivets. I am going to use 1/4" SS button head Allen screws and nylocks on mine. Bridge, I don't know, I think they usually came with the fender and may not be available unless you make your own. You can see the right side cable guide in the back of the picture of my bridge. It looks like it is spot welded on.

Thanks Dave
I can get rivets locally, i am going to cut 1/2 an inch off the bridge and re drill it.
