Does anyone out there have a fastback tail with an original badge. I need to determine the diameter for my restoration. The badges in the tank recesses are slightly larger. If anyone has one, I really appreciate it if you could measure it. A picture of it on the bike would be great too. Thanks

It depends how late a '68. The early ones were like the '67 show bikes - no "Norton" logo or badge anywhere, just the "green turn signals". I had left before the groundswell of public opinion made N-V resurrect the old logo.

The machine I am restoring is early 1968. It was about the 175th machine made and was made in the first few days of May 1968. The bike was very original and has the Norton-Villers round type badges.

I also have a question regarding the "750 Commando" decals on the accessory cover and oil tank. I have seen pictures of the early 1968 machines with and without these decals. Does anyone know whether the early machines had decals or not?

The 68 Riders Handbook I have shows no transfer on the oil tank. No picture of the accessory cover, and there is no mention of transfers in the spares book that I can find. Only the tank badge, fairing badge and reserve and main transfers. Maybe it changed when they started making the new 'Fastbacks' after 70?

Thanks Dave. That agrees with my parts book with the exception of mine calling for two Roadholder decals on the front forks.

Yeah, I missed the forks, I've never been up close to a real 68 Commando.

From what I have read and been told, no production machines were ever built with the green ball badges. The Norton Villiers badges were eliminated sometime around the end of the '68 or beginning of the '69 model run.

I got the chance to look at an original tail section with an original badge on it so I could measure it. I became convinced that I was never going to fond NOS discs or find anyone willing to make them so I did some research and have finally produced a prototype. Now I am casting some finish discs. If anyone has any interest in the process I can post some pics and a description of the process.

A friend of mine made some on his lathe from a piece of round acrylic bar. He silkcreened the logo on the back side and then sprayed it with silver paint. Came out looking real nice, but a lot of work to get the curve in them right.
