67 Atlas

Finally had 30 minutes this weekend to devote to the Atlas. Not complaining as i had the grandkids around for the last 3 weeks and had the chance to watch the Phillies pitch a no hitter against the Cubs at Wrigley yesterday.
Ran the bike hard for 30+ minutes, and as before, it died while idling down for a traffic light. Immediately jumped off and pulled the plugs and tried for a spark and nothing. Let the bike cool off for about 10 minutes and it eventually fired back up. Definitely heat related and based on feedback here, sounds like a mag condensor issue.
Choice now is do I tackle this myself, or does this go to my Norton guy. Like to try this myself, but riding season and spare time is short here.

I think I may have mentioned it before but I popped in a Brighspark in my K2FC. You have to pull the magneto from the bike but once it's on your bench, it takes about an hour to snip the old condenser out of the circuit and then the new BrightSpark pops right in.

I bought my BrightSpark from Skip Brolund and I'm very happy with it.

JohnnyMac's suggestion is a DIY option. It gets you a condenser that works at least cost, but the rest of the mag still has 40 year old parts. If you opt for a complete rebuild, I would not advise DIY, rather send it out. The latter option gets you a virtually new magneto, a boost on the magnetism, and a rewind on the armature; price about $450. PM me for a reference on a complete rebuild if you want that option.

Ok, i'm finally back to work on the 67 Atlas.
Just got the mag back after a complete rebuild, and with a drill attached, it sparked and crackled like new. When I took the mag off back in mid July, I dutifully put all nuts, bolts, washers, etc in baggies and placed them on the lift next to the bike.
Now, 3 months later, I go to install the mag and time the bike and somehow am now missing a couple of fixing parts- oil junction bolt and washers, and the lower fixing bolt, nut and washers for the magneto (I have the stud nuts and washers)
Can anyone give me the parts numbers? Any recommended vendors who may be able to help? (old Britt's is on vacation thru the 25th) No pics in all my Atlas manuals, and I don't want to waste any more time and/or money than I have to getting this finally sorted out.
As always, thanks in advance for the help!

Also- can't remember, but is the lower fixing bolt on the magneto placed with the bolt facing so the nut is outside the timing case to the opposite?

The lower magneto fixing bolt has the nut inside the timing case.

Try <www.classicbike.biz> for a parts diagram. A part number on the junction block fixing bolt should be easily found ... dunno about the magneto bolt, but you could use a Yankee 5/16-18 (turn down the shank to 1/4 to allow some magneto chain adjustment).

Trust my old eyes are good enough to read the numbers correctly........

Twenty plus years ago Motor Cycle Shop in London had a drawer full of them ex Andover Norton stock. I believe all the Norton stock was sold back to Andover Norton. They might be worth a try. Having the correct part numbers really does help when asking for spare parts........ Suggest the next thing you should obtain is a parts list. Hell I have one and I dont have an Atlas..thank god..I want to keep the tooth fillings that still exist!!

Rabers or British Only has the bolt you are looking for...I just bought one a few weeks ago..

Finally installed rebuilt magneto and timed the bike using 11/32" btdc. Used a cigarette paper to check for the points to open, tightened down the AAU jammed to full advance, and put all the rest of the bike together.
Since the bike hadn't been run since mid July, I probably should have cleaned out the jets, but just started kicking away. Checked the new plugs for spark and they throwing big fat sparks.
About 10 kicks into it- and after a couple of "almost" kickbacks, she fired up. I let her idle a bit and blipped the throttle and ran at some steady rpms, and she sounded fine- no popping, and no hesitation under throttle. Couldn't due a proper road test due to weather, but will later this week.
Thanks to many members of this board for your help, especially Ed Zender, Slick, Beach and all the other Atlas experts out there.
