66 Atlas price

Hello, new member here.

I'm going to be looking at a 66 Atlas. It's complete and all there. Very sweaty and crusty but apparently runs and drives.

Assuming it starts, and appears drivable what would be a ballpark price range?

It's going to need a complete going through for sure. I've restored a few bikes and hot rods but I have no experience with Norton. Parts supply seems low for the Atlas so I'm a little concerned about that. Usually I have luck joining a forum and finding all the parts places. Sometimes forum members make parts or have huge stashes, so I joined here to scope out the Atlas scene.

Thanks in advance for any pricing advise on the Atlas, or things to look for when I go to look it over.

Welcome to the forum.

Pricing ranges anywhere from "take it away for free", to a dreamer asking $10k. Without pics and some diagnostic tests, assigning a value is impossible. "Starts and runs" is a low bar.

If it's truly that sweaty and crusty, and you want to end up with a head turner of a bike, expect to spend well over what the bike is worth to get it there. A Cinderella story comes along now and then, but certainly don't expect it.

Parts supply is generally pretty good. Many parts are still being made new, at the best attempt at OEM quality, with a handful of passionate aftermarket suppliers. There were never that many Nortons sold, so the secondhand parts scene is ok with patience, and the Atlas shares a lot of motor parts with the earlier Commandos. Ebay is a roll of the dice, as always with any motorbike. If there's a secret handshake that unleases the deluge of free and cheap spares, I've yet to be made hip to it. Your best bet is to have a local shop that knows these things inside and out and can set you up with the service and parts you need. Rebuilding your first Brit bike without that resource is jumping into the deep end. Certainly possible, but there will be some swimming.

+1 above. The parts are out there and some of the bigger parts dealers have stuff. There are a few bike breakers on eBay and a good place to search. Late Dominator and early Commando parts will fill in the voids.

Being "all there" is important to me, for a missing bolt might cost you $8.00 to purchase plus shipping.
Sweaty and crusty is of some concern ...... I have seen some parts clean up well, but a rechrome job on a muffler or mudguard is a pricy endeavor.

One weak point on Atlas is the clutch center, used to be called a spyder. The "wings" or "paddles" of the spyder have a tendency to fracture, giving the clutch a lot of backlash play.

I would go $4k on the start, and limit to $4.5k on the high side. But it depends on how much you want a well handling Bike with the Norton badge.

You can occasionally find “oily rag” runners for about 5k, be patient and don’t let long haul shipping turn you off. Some companies ship at reasonable prices. My Atlas came from California and was shipped to North Carolina.

When you're looking for parts ask here first. Many of us have extra parts and we are likely to respond to someone in the group that needs a part.
