650SS Rebuild

I have started the assembly, something i have been looking forward to for some months but best laid plans still seem to bite me in the bum!- On visual in spection the cup and cone steering head bearings looked ok but as soon as i i installed them and fitted the yokes i was proven very wrong they were as notchy as, and by this time it is Saturday afternoon and all the speciallist shops are closed, So For my plan of attack i knew i had some new 6205 2RS bearings at work so i went and got but now i had to find a piece of pipe to make a bearing spacer, Saturday night beers with freinds and yes a mate had a piece in his garage that i could have [thanks Trev], so a bit of time on the lathe and a spacer i had. As previously stated i had asembled the forks so fitting them was strait forward. swingarm also has been refitted so some progress has been made for the weekend.

Sa a P11 750 today , tank off , still maintains factory paint . I suspect there is a similarity in the pigmentation . 8)

Just whose bike are you calling a pig ?

Unless you have spectroscopic vision, black paint looks like black paint ?

No , No . Im talking about red tanks ! 8) , not T-72s either ! The tank in the original paint was alongside the machine . :)

im of the opinion that the mettalic Red tank would be Groovier . :p The P 11 had niether tank nor seat on , so the rideing position was racerish.
Was the one tube top to steering head , so preumably series one . no brace tube under . Presume the tanks wouldve been sprayed alongside Ea other,
if its ' the same ' paint . Somewhat faded in this case , but original factory graphics , and noticeably not ten feet of paint . A nice even covering ,
but thats about it . Saveing a few grammes here and there , all adds up .

Small progress at the moment, i have been working out the rear guard mounting, as there are few pictures in the parts book and no measurements i have had to guess the dimensions of the studs and spacers that mount the rear guard, I have deduced that the studs to be 2 of 3/8x 3-1/2cei and spacers 4 of 3/8id x5/8od x1-1/8 which i have made photos to follow shortly

Frank- That has been a discussion point for some time, this bike spent the first 1-2 years with our Traffic Enforcement [cops] and 2 years ago at a local bike show i got into a conversation with an old gentleman about a 650SS he owned which had come from the cop force he was able to quote the rego number which sounded familiar so i noted this persons contact and went home and checked yes he was the first civillian owner of this bike, yes he stated it was a red colour when he owned it though due to the fact it would have had a radio mounted to the tank it was proberbly repainted by the force.

due to the fact it would have had a radio mounted to the tank

This is the reason why the tank was replaced with an Atlas tank, there would be a Radio cutout in the Ploice tank

No it was fitted with a "Triumph toast rack" 4 threaded mounting holes in the tank that i have had removed.

Triumph toast rack" might even have been fitted for carrying the lunch box of the police rider.
I had an ex-police Atlas that had radio cut-out, and the frame, oil tank, battery box + tank were all white, or ivory.
What colour was your frame e.t.c.?

Frame is black and guards chrome, arigonal battery box extended to take an extra battery- 2" added

Interesting, as Norton would make bespoke machines for the Police and the Armed services. Some would come with full Avon fairing and Blue lights, two-tone horns e.t.c.
Mine came with srandard battery box.

Yes but NewZealand being a small market, and speaking to some older mechanics that were around then it apears that we received civillian models that were converted on arrival in NZ.

Slow progress still, I have been working away mounting the guards and wheels, I have sat the gearbox loosely in the cradle and am waiting for the engine to be completed by my engineer , to which he has promised the bottom end this weekend so hopefully more progress shortly.

I had purchased a sidestand from Norvil but when fitted i had to disasemble and modify to close properly .

Got my bottom end back from Barry Lynch an engineer and freind that i have known for over 30 years he is well known in the local classic scene as being a perfectionist.
basicly the motor was a fullo rebuild- crank shaft regrind rebore cam bushes and most things in between, the head is his next project. anyway i mounted the cases etc today, i have been lucky enough that a freind is remanufacturing cycle thread nuts so i have been able to replace a loot of 3/8, 516 1/4 26 tpi hard ware the mating CEI bolts came from British Spares, more pprogress tomorrow.

Today I got the Engine plates bolted up with distance tube fitted between plates so the footrests don't bend the engine mount plates, We also got the barrells mounted and tighted down but again [probably due to Kiwi's can fix anything beleif] All the barrell nuts were replaced with new CEI ones as the old were a mixture of well rounded CEI and UNF as most people don't know the difference of/have not a good range of Whitworth spanners sockets etc.

Your handlebars are ugly as hell. Look like they are off a scrambler or dirt-tracker.

They are the standard Norton "Western Bars", aren't they ?
Commandos, USA delivery, came with exactly the same thing.

Very comfortable, unless you want to lap Daytona at 120++

Come to think of it, didn't the Manxman have the same thing ?

Those are not what came on the American-spec Dominator.

Thanks for the fun but irrelevant fact, as usual....

No, the Manxman did not come with those bars either, they were at least twice as high.

Zero points again Rohan, as usual. Hey I have an idea, do some research before you write, it would save a lot of space around here......

All I was doing was voicing a personal opinion, I never implied any information or facts about anything as you assumed to be the case, once again, you fixate on something that doesn't exist anywhere outside your skull.....

Overall a nice bike though Possm.....
