Hi Friends
I see a lot of good tinks about the Yamaha 650 SX on this forum, so I decide to find one, I go to a Yamaha dealer over here and ask for the parts catalogue, no valve in the catalogue! very strange, Then I go to the Nederland to meet a 650 SX specialist : Heiden Tuning in the city of Amersfoort, the guy had some valves in stock, so I buy one. Iask Heiden if this was a OEM fitment, He say "no this is aftermarket, this valve don't exist as OEM part"
So why do everybody speak about a 650 sx valve? Or maybe the valve was only fit on 650SX for the US mùarquet??

Cheers
Yves

I think they made it with that bike in mind, But it is an aftermarket part that is sold by a guy that sells a lot of parts for the XS 650. Mike is his name and you can look at his site, Just look up Mikes XS on the web. Chuck.

Yves,

I believe the confusion is because of the seller's name, Mikes XS. The advert claims new, OEM and vintage parts. I made the assumption the PCV valve was a Yamaha XS 650 factory part. Not so. It's definitely after market. Regardless, it works very well on our Commandos. CNW has a very nice looking PCV valve, but it's 14 times more money then the XS valve. I do know from experience the XS valve gets the job done.

I tried to buy one from this chap and he refused to send one overseas, he directed me to a dealer in Japan and when I pointed out that this was over 3,000 miles away from me and effectively not much closer than the USA, he suggested a dealer in Europe 6,000 miles away! I don't want to turn this into a political tirade, but this is not unusual with American businesses - although I hasten to add that I have had many good experiences with US suppliers as well, but it is no wonder that the US balance of trade is so bad!

Hi Dave,

Yea, our stuff is so good we don't like it leaving the country. Wanna buy a Chevy?
In what part of HK to you live?

Well I think the issue is spending all the time filling out the paper work to send a part worth $15.00 May not seem fair but this may be why.

so what was this part originally designed for?

You're not the first to ask this question - best guess so far is a lawnmower part!

I'm guessing that they're referred to as the Yamaha XS 650 valve because their owners/spares suppliers made the discovery and cornered the market first?
I hate when that happens!

I bought a couple from Holland and they came through no problem; great service - although UK customs had clearly torn the package to pieces before I got it.
What could they have been thinking

Thanks illf8ed, I'll pass on the Chevy for now. If you are familiar with Hong Kong, I live in a Hakka fishing village in Saikung Country Park.
Hortons Norton, I was actually going to order 2 or 3 valves but the communication never actually got that far. I only mention this because this is a popular topic and those of us not domiciled in the USA who might want to purchase one or more of theses valves should be aware that Mikes XS will not supply overseas - not to HK anyway.

I just ordered 2 from Holland....€13 each, plus €15 shipping...€41 total, the German shop was €13 each, plus €43 shipping.....figure that one out!!

The Dutch site was easier to order from too, straightforward link to Paypal!!

For some reason german shipping has always been high. I use to send light packages to all over europe, and to germany was almost double the other eu countries. Guess it's high for them to ship out of the country also.

I agree, this seems to be an insurmountable issue for a lot of dealers. The reality is, unless you're dealing with restricted goods, this paper work is usually just a different waybill when shipping via postal service, an international waybill as opposed to domestic waybill. Courier companies require a second form, a commercial invoice which takes about 2 minutes to complete.

Sadly most auto parts are manufactured and shipped from china or japan in the first place. (Nortons of coarse are made in the uk.)

When I sold my lister dual disc front end in the early spring (ebay) a New Zealand bidder and a US bidder got into a bidding war and it sold for about $2500.00. If I hadn't offered to sell it overseas I would have gotten only one serious bidder and would only have gotten about $4-500.00 for the set up. Businesses that don't ship internationally are missing out on a lot of profit$ IMHO.

Wow, you're out in the country. My visits to HK were all business, so stayed in Tsuen Wan - Marco Polo and visited LSI in the New Territories. LSI closed shop in July, so probably not much opportunity in the future to see HK.

Are there some good Norton roads close by?

Illf8ed, If you do come again P.M. me and I will get some of the enthusiasts together for some drinks and a chat. I may even have another bike ready by then. Regarding roads, inside the Country Park there is a vehicle restricted (as a resident I have a permit) uninterrupted 5 mile stretch of road that seems to have been designed by a civil engineer who owned a BSA Gold Star. The only hazards are stray dogs, cows and monkeys! I should make a video and post the link on this site.

I'm getting ready to order one of these valves from Mikes. I've searched the forum for a diagram of where and how to mount this thing and have found none. Can someone point the way, or explain exactly where to put it on my '74 Mk II?

Here's how I did mine on a 72:

650 SX PCV valve

I just ordered one a few minutes ago. The picture helps me with the concept where to locate it, however can you guys please
give me some real "dummy" installation instructions? For example, I see from the picture on the site I ordered it from that
the item has an "in" and an "out" male leads. Again, I am a dummy and could easily screw this up, so exactly what lines
from where go in to the in and outs? Perhaps a line drawing of my present stock set up with what is being changed to what
lines? I have a slightly leaking mainshaft seal in to my normally dry belt primary and I am hoping this relieves this problem.
Do you secure the lines with hose clamps or zip ties, and how how to secure the breather to forward of the battery, maybe velcro?
thanks everyone, I don't want to screw this up!
