'By the way, cars kill close to 300 people a year in NYC'

Is that electric cars? Mobile/stationery or on charge??

how many people will have to be crushed, squashed or burned to death in the name of oil!

Mocking bird media
The Irish examiner this week "Europe is warming twice as fast as the rest of the world"

Try Googling 'warming twice as fast as rest of world' seems everywhere is warming twice or even 4 times as fast as everywhere else.

I dont know why but while I was flicking through Google ...I had a memory go through my mind of Mr Jones saying "Don't panic" to Mr Mannering.... from Dads Army...😁

A valid question.

But I have a counter question: how many people would starve or freeze to death if we ‘just stopped oil’ as our current mob of protesters are demanding?

Oil literally lubricates virtually every aspect of society. I know it’s tempting to blame ‘them’ for their love of oil, but really, without it, life as we know it would be over.

I would argue that if we did ‘just stop oil’ the mad quest for firewood would result in there being no trees on the planet within 5 years.

Then we’d have a serious freakin’ problem !

Before the industrial revolution your fate if not a noble or a priest or monk was to toil in the fields and die an early death. So yes the technology brought by that same Industrial revolution kills people but has also raised life expectancy for the plebs from 40 to 80. Baby and bathwater springs to mind.

PS as the UK is responsible for the first industrial revolution on which all the others are based then royalties are due, not funds going the other way as Climate reparations. An extra 40 years life is a benefit to most people.

Was being a bit sarcastic.
The problem is people, human beings. There are too many of us to turn back now. It's a dark and unpleasant reality.
Unfortunately the machine needs bodies to sustain itself.

Forgive me, went straight over my head !

I used to think that. But I don’t anymore. I do genuinely believe we can exist sustainably on this planet without wrecking it.

I believe we have the ingenuity and that we will find the necessary technological breakthroughs in things like energy and food production.

But we need to correctly instigate, motivate and harness that ingenuity.

It’s just that I don’t believe any of our current governments are going about this in remotely the right way, they seem more interested in PR driven headlines achieved by making new targets and laws. All of which, unless enabled by real technological advancement, are simply meaningless.

My belief is we need to be far more realistic about the time frames required to achieve the best outcomes, and the methods by which to do so. But the (in my opinion) highly dramatised positions put forward by the activists group actually prevent this. So in a kind of ultimately ironic way, I believe the activists are actually holding back true progress.

Enough… I shall vacate the soap box…

I'm an old guy and interact with other old guys. The majority of them are anti green energy, wind, solar, battery powered cars etc. I'v heard all the reasons why none of this new technology will never work. They don't seem to realize that the oil that new technology is meant to replace is not and never has been as cheap as some think. The U.S. and other western countries have spent trillions of dollars, and thousands of lives keeping shipping lanes open and propping up governments since WWII for that cheap oil, fighting wars, some maybe just, some maybe not, all terribly mismanaged. IMO. A lot of the money paid out for oil has financed terrorism against the west and is currently financing the invasion of a peaceful European nation. Since the 70's unreliable oil supply has disrupted world economies every few years and the president, prime minister or whatever leader of your country gets blamed for the bad economy. So I often wonder why would anyone want to continue down the same path of oil dependency without trying something different. And don't worry nothing is going to change tomorrow, it will take decades to cut oil dependency in half and won't be a problem or a benefit to most of us old guys anyway. Oh, I forgot to mention climate change.
Why? Because physics.

Various newspapers are reporting that they have climbed up gantrys across various sections of the M25, causing widespread traffic chaos. Again, I wonder why such intrusions warrant the plods closing the motorway? Leave them up there, they will come down when they are cold / hungry enough. If they start throwing things at passing traffic, then thats in a different league and may warrant use of force to bring them down.

One picture is of a 'distressed' looking little girl captioned "I'm here because I dont have a future". She may be correct, her immediate future will probably be a spell in Holloway.

Glad I was on the road yesterday, despite getting a bit damp.

I crossed the QE2 bridge 4:30 am last Friday, traffic filtered down to one lane then off at Junction 1. Thought it might be the lunatic fringe with their superglue, but all was normal when I returned 6am so assume they were either chiselled off pretty pronto, or probably just another set of the endless roadworks that seem to be endemic in the UK at the moment...

That is WAY overly optimistic!

...except they'd need firewood-stoked steamers to get all the foreign timber over here (or there) so we (or they) could burn it in those last waning days of civilization as we knew it...

Don't panic !!!
I'm sure Coke will save us and take immediate action

Did you know that every time you open a bottle or can of Coke, that you emit 6grams/litre of ‘carbon pollution’ (CO2) into the atmosphere?

Those tiny bubbles may look innocent enough - but they are ‘carbon pollution’ which causes bad weather.

If we are going to return the climate to the safe & stable one our great grandparents knew, then this has to stop.

After all, in a ‘Net Zero’ world, fizzy drinks like Coke will be a thing of the past.

It’s time Coca-Cola bring out a new version - ‘Coke Flat’ without any bubbles. 🤣

Speaking of endless road works
New Zealand is now the land of road cones🛑

Not once has mankind ever in the history of it's existence existed peacefully anywhere. We are violent, irrational and greedy to the core. I admire your optimism and sincerely hope you are proven correct sooner rather than later.
