Hello,

I just bought a 1971 Norton off a friend. It has no gas tank (fiberglass one junk). So...I've read many articles on Fiberglass and everyone is searching for the golden sealer and Metal tanks that don't seem to fit right....so I'm confused what I should do. I'd rather spend more up front for quality lasting tank than play the game. Anyone care to comment? I'm open to all suggestions.
Thank you

I have a friends '71 Roadster with the glass tank and carb off yet again as the leaching of the resin has gotten worse and the entire fuel system is gummed up. We looked at types of resin liners and whilst promising what appears obvious is that if the liner goes bad, the tank is history. The friend is also worried that the goop will clog the fuel lines when he is out on a ride and that's a fair consideration. Good liners are not cheap and there's the time involved to do the job properly. The alternative is to find a good original metal tank - hopefully without a hidden bondo repair - or an India repro which seem to benefit from some skill full body filler and a decent paint job. Weighing up the pros and cons, the decision is leaning toward the India tank as a raw metal import. In the long run, its going to outlast the glass and liner option.

Thank you. I am not afraid of body work. I actually like it. I'd do anything than have to worry about the time bomb waiting to leak gas and ruin and expensive paint job.
What are thoughts on Aluminum tanks? Do they blind you while driving?

Ally tanks are great, mostly custom made but generally quite expensive and easy to dent. If you are going to a paint scheme, better to stay with steel.

Welcome! They come around, I saw a beautiful original steel Interstate tank on fleabay last night for $400. Roadster stuff comes up.

I'd be tempted by the partsparadise51 on ebay from india. But that's just my opinion. There have been several lads that have had a good experience with them, no guarantee, but less than $300USD delivered. I'm tempted. Otherwise $ is the limit

I went for the partsparadise tank. Figured it was cheap enough to allow me to spend a bit to seal/modify if I had to. At least you start with a solid part, not lined with crap, or half rusted through. Liners are another gamble, lots of claims from manufacturers, but if it fails you in a year or two, or after government ups the Ethanol % then you are back to square 1.

I need a big spoiled glass Norton tank to put my ashes in so interested in your trashed tank. A 1st Norton is like having a child with genetic defects to correct some of them and learn live with and love the remaining quirks for one hoot of a life style with others in similar parenthood challenges.

Why nothing at t'all and my gay friends call me a tight ass virgin. I'm just aware my days left ain't as many as spent already so thinking of some lasting grins. Gotta be some thing Norton yet something not useable again or I'd be dumped out to keep on trucking.

Good gawd! 400 bucks? There is another one on there right now for closer to 1300! I'd have bought one for 400 just to have it around!

There is one on ebay uk for 1300 pounds, it comes with side panels, oh goody. Thats 3 bucks short of $2000 US!

Sorry, If you buy it for that price you've got too much money, but I guess some people have.

Virgin? Come on out of there, Steve. It'll all make sense then.

Maybe we should see the other side of that ass picture you covet.

Why yes indeedy Sir icerman. Everything existent has yin/yang/+/- polarities blended more or less one way or another so just thank my lucky Stars my plumbing matches the gender behavior that was set while still a fetus inside womb. Its tough on those not so polarized and I'm feminine enough to be object of gay affection most my life so just enjoy the attention of interesting folks w/o any dates thankyou. Some of my webshots were deleted because of the N word "nipple" was associated with an oil filter photo. A few more fresh dead deer on sides of my paths give me the willies and who pays any attention to a stuffy ole urn. Even dead the danM deer are still hazards d/t the clutter of big buzzards till something is able to drag most of it away. I don't feel much more lucky than those deer, how about you?

Steel rusts and resin dissolves and who knows what next new age fuel will do. Just that about the most un-soluable resin this last decade is two part epoxy like Castwells, put on about 1/4" in one of more layers. I beiieve you could peel away all the original tank leaving the cap of course and keep on trucking.

And that was a "buy it now" price!

try GTL , Gas Tank Liner (google), they fixed my 1980 XR 750 tank that was delaminating (and irreplaceable). They do a great job. If you have a salvageable tank they have a process that cleans the old lining with aluminum oxide pellets in a slow speed "shaker".

I told my family that I refuse to be hauled to my gravesite in a Caddy hearse, so the standing order is that I'm going in the back of my Dodge pickup. 'Just put her in compound low, and block traffic all the way there!

Agreed, except I don't think it's limited to just the first Norton. 'Just sayin'...
