1977 850 Primary case tab removal...?

Hi, Im putting my primary case back together and there is a tab on the stator mounting plate which prevents the rotor to slide though the inside of that plate. Is that tab there for a reason or can I grind that bad boy off??? http://www.oldbritts.com/1975_g11.html #18 ( " Outrigger Plate " ) I guess
