Considering what a Commando engine and gearbox are like, I am amazed those bikes ever did so well. It is an example of doing a lot with very little. I think the basic design was actually very good - but strange. Theoretically, it should not work well enough for racing.

Interesting picture of the transporter.
I remember driving down to Anderstorpe race track from Norway in the eighties and a Vulcan bomber doing a fly past at the races.

Norton didn't have the quickest bike on the track, but thanks to John Player they had by far the quickest race transporter in the race Paddock, powered by a Chevy V8 engine. One mag did a road/ track test on it.
Rectrans Discoverer R25 on a Dodge M300 chassis with Chrysler 413.

These were built by the Rectrans subsidiary of the White Corporation, atop the industrial Dodge M300 chassis. The design mandate, which fell to Larry Shinoda of Corvette Sting Ray, Chevy Z28 Camaro and Boss 302 Mustang fame, was for a streamlined RV capable of more than 10mpg. Wind tunnel testing aided in a final figure of 10.1mpg with a top speed of more than 100mph. Power is from a Dodge 413 backed by a 727 Torqueflite auto.

More from Anderstorp. These images are from the Swedish NOC magazine.

"The two racing bikes that Rådhe imported for the Anderstorp races were kept in Sweden and are still here."

"Anderstorp 1970. Rådhe (The main Norton importer in Sweden) sponsored two Norton production racers for the Anderstorp races. The wet tarmac and rainy wheather couldn't stop English racer Charlie Sanby on number 18 from an outstanding victory. "He were running eights around his competitors" says people watching the races. The other Norton rider, on number four, was Kurt Ivan Carlsson. He finished in fourth place so Rådhes was happy with the turnout. After the races the two bikes remained in Sweden."

Another one from Anderstorp while we are at it. This was taken in august 1969. Kjell Bogren talking to Ray Pickrell. (Also from the Swedish NOC mag.) Love the clogs. That was huge in Sweden in the 70's.

That airstrip straight is loooong. Last year the wretched matchbox float chamber didn't supply enough fuel for more than halfway on the Norton. Replaced with a Gardner, kept it going the whole straight.
