Re: 1973 Norton Commando 750 - Should I buy?

I am very excited. Can't wait to pick it up. Hopefully I can find some time to work on it...lol

I have downloaded the workshop manual, is there anything else I should get before I start working on the bike? Anything you guys think I am going to need?

Re: 1973 Norton Commando 750 - Should I buy?

Oh crap. I was talking to the guy's son today and I mentioned that I was buying his dad's bike. He wasn't happy, and talked to his dad because apparently he wants it now that his dad is selling it.

So his dad might change his mind and not sell it at all. That would suck. I hope he doesn't change his mind, although I would understand if he did, since family comes first. I should have taken the money out yesterday and went and bought it. Stupid work, getting in the way of motorcycle buying.

Yes, such a serious inconvenience at times. Without it though, we wouldn't have any money to buy our motorcycles!

As CP said, whatever is meant to happen, will happen...

I look at things differently. It it is meant to be, Make It Happen. If I didn't I wouldn't have chit.

Re: 1973 Norton Commando 750 - Should I buy?

I had a talk with the son again today, and we made a deal. Can't disclose full details of the deal, but it includes free motorcycle rides and beer! And he admitted he was being a dick and he would never had done anything with it. So by 6:30 pm tonight I will officially have a Norton!

If he was being a dick I'd quickly forget about the rides or the beer after the bike is in your possession.

Re: 1973 Norton Commando 750 - Should I buy?

The chances of him coming for beers and rides are slim to none, since I was talking to him online and he now lives approximately 6000 km away from here! lol

For those of you who are curious as to where Labrador city is, google it...seriously in the middle of nowhere, the link to the map above shows how far the guys son is away from me...lol

HOLY CRAP, MAN. It sounded like it was in the next neighborhood.
Just hitchhike over there with a fresh battery in your backpack, (just in case) and ride home before the weather sets in. I see you'll be taking the Beaver from Milwaukee to Muskegon. Stop in at Grand Rapids and we'll have a look at it.

Just kidding of course. Owning is one thing, possessing is another. How are you getting this jewel home?

Re: 1973 Norton Commando 750 - Should I buy?

lol...sorry for the confusion. The bike is already here in Labrador City, the son is still in Burnaby...lol

Re: 1973 Norton Commando 750 - Should I buy?

I got it...now I am a little scared...gonna be a fun project though, there are a lot of parts now even out of packages. New Headers, new seat cover, new chain, all new gaskets, clutch rebuild kit, the tires were even brand new in 1985 the last time it was driven.

The bike had 3000 original miles, but the spedometer was busted, so I don't know if that is accurate or not. The bike even came with 26 year old gas...lol

It has a fiberglass tank which might be an issue, since I won't be able to get my hands on avgas here, but apparently Shell 91 Octane in Canada contains no Ethanol, so I might be ok.

Serial Number is 152690, it is actually a 1972. Not sure what model it is, I am sure you guys will be able to Identify it by the tank and stuff.

Re: 1973 Norton Commando 750 -should I buy?

Looks like a 71 motor with the breather coming off the cam (safe assumption)(unpainted barrels) LAB will confirm. Being a late 71 serial number, this could easily be titled as a 72. Nice rocker covers. Inside of tank look pretty fair. If the gas was 26 years old I doubt there would have been any ethanol in it. I think you will be better off than most in this regard.
Nice kit. Great find. Congratulations!

Re: 1973 Norton Commando 750 - Should I buy?

Nowhere to get powder coating within 600km, so it is going to have to be painted! I am going to soda blast it tomorrow, or maybe wednesday, then decide my route from there.

Re: 1973 Norton Commando 750 - Should I buy?

152690 is between Oct 71 (150723) and Jan 72 (200001). I think you should just send it down to me so I can have it ready for this years most improved.

Paint will be just fine. :)

The primary covers look good. Those are impossible to find in good condition, it seems. Dad just spent $125 on a decent-looking outer cover alone! :O

Nice-looking motor, too!
