I have the opportunity to buy a 1973 Norton Commando 750.

I don't have a lot of information right now, but I know the guy who owns it took it apart 15 years ago to replace a bearing in the gearbox and replaced it, but never reassembled it. He never reassembled it because he didn't want to reinstall it until he got his tank and frame painted. He never did get it painted so it is still in pieces.

He is willing to sell me the bike and a full set of tools for $1000. He has new parts that he bought of the last 15 years that he is giving with the bike, (New Exhaust, new Seat)

What do you guys think?

(P.S. this will be my first bike and my first building experience)

Why are you asking, get the cash and go pick it up. If not give me the info and I will go. That is a very fair price, you will not regret it.

1. Go to bank.
2. Go buy bike.
3. Get manuals for said bike.
4. Do lots of searches here and ask lots of questions.
5. Finish the job that the PO did not. Take your time. Read and read, then do.

6. When it is done drive by his house v-e-r-y slowly.

By the way, I would go with $750 (for the 750) and tell him it is Karma. Use the extra $250 for parts.

Fill in some profile info about where you are. If someone from this forum is in the area, they may be able to take a look with you.

He said $1000 is as low as he would go....he is pretty firm, but with the new parts, I figure it would be worth it.

Just have to convince the wife!

It's more than worth it at $1000.

Tell your wife that when you are done with it and a 'little' more investment, it will be worth 5x what you are paying. Although you would never sell it. :)

Ok, I have the wife convinced, I am going to contact the owner tomorrow. I was talking to him about this bike almost 2 months ago, and have been sitting on this information ever since. He isn't advertising the bike for sale I just accidentally stumbled on the information that he had it in his basement. I hope to god he still has it. I will keep you updated.

If you never hear from me again, it is because he sold it to someone else and I am too depressed to come online anymore.

Just look for another (Norton) project. Don't worry.

The one I got, I was sitting on for about 7 months. He also was not advertising it. I am hopeful for you.

I just got a hold of him and he still has it. He is going to get all the parts together for me and I pick it up on Friday. The wife doesn't remember giving me permission to buy it an hour ago, but she will forgive me eventually! I heard her say it was ok...lol

I told my dad about this a few weeks ago and when I said a Norton his eyes lit up, so I know I have his support for putting it together. We have a paint booth, that I just painted my 1980 Camaro in, so the paint shouldn't be an issue.

I am very very excited now!

I will post pictures on Friday when I pick it up!

You'll have to sweet talk your wife and be a good boy for quite a few years now. Good for you.

Ok here is my thoughts when it comes to a bike like that. "It's already broken, you can't make it any worse." Go get it! lol

Dose it feel like friday will never get here? Do you lay awake thinking about it? Do you feel more glee the closer friday gets? These are the early signs of a thing I like to call Norton addiction. Do not seek help enjoy it

Sometimes it is easier to ask for and receive forgiveness that to get permission. If you don't do it, I will find you and kick your butt............. right after I buy it!!! On second thought, I will just buy it and skip the butt kicking, I am liable to get hurt.
