1973 Mk1 camshaft wear

I am starting to dig into the engine of my current project; a 1973 MK1 Commando.



Inspection revealed most camshaft lobes to be pitted.

This is the worst.


I saw a used OEM cam on ebay that had the exact wear pattern as mine (only worse!) which leads me to believe that it is a common problem.
Previous posts indicate that cams can be refurbished. Does anyone have recent experience with this? Cost? Shop used?

Is it better to just purchase a new cam? British Only sells a standard replacement cam for around $370 (I do not know the make). The stock cam spec will be OK with me as no racing is planned.....only spirited riding . All other engine components are stock. Is there a particular camshaft brand that is recommended? What have you good folks had luck with?

How about shops that regrind the followers? Recommendations?

Is this the same beljum that did the nice triumph build thread over on B.B.com? As Paul says Jim Comstock has some experience good and bad with regrind cams. I am not sure of the current opinion of Web cams but at one time they were good. That said you are only as good as your last job. Email (Trevor the tech) over at B.O. for all back up info on the cam they have.

I have had good luck with Webcam. They weld them up and regrind them with your choice of grind. For most street use I would recommend their #12 grind which is very similar to stock. Jim

That would be me. Thanks for the kind words. WVK was such a blast to rebuild and now ride. I figure to pester the heck out of you guys over here now for Norton info.

Thanks for the heads up....my cam is already in a box and I’m shipping it out to Riverside Calif (Webcam) tomorrow. A nice time would be had by me if I could go with it and experience warm weather and sunshine for a change.
