Hello folks!
New member and first post here.

I am not very knowledgable with nortons and am looking for some information.
I have an opportunity to purchase a 1972 Norton 750r. The one with the full front race fairing, and the bike is yellow.
My friends father purchased it brand new and took it straight home and fully disassembled it in his basement. Essentially the bike is "new" without any miles on it. It is just apart in pieces in boxes. It's been apart since he brought it home.
My question is, what is something like this worth?
Any insight on this bike would be greatly appreciated.

In addition, he has another older Norton that was also disassembled when new. I'm just not sure of the year and model of this one.

Regards,
Larry

Larry it's worth what the person with the most money who wants it will cough up for it. Start the advertising process. Auctioneers ,E-bay , Kajiji ,foreign bike shops ,posts , etc. Or put it together and ride it ,my choice, all rubber and seals will need to be replaced. A start. Now tell us about the other one. P.M. me if before 1965. Ha.

I want to buy the 750r for myself. Just not sure what it's worth for my offer.
Also the other Norton is early 50's (I think) it's in the same condition as the 750r new, but just fully taken apart.
I'll find out tomorrow exactly what year and model it is.

Larry P.M. me. A basket case is worth less in general unless it's all wrapped up in plastic bags clean.. Super low mileage is the big seller. See how much he wants for the 72 . What's the mystery other ?

Larry welcome to the forum. I suggest that you do NOT ignore the forum public posts, this is the place to get and to share knowledge on Nortons and has some very knowledgeable people on board.

First and foremost take some photos of the components and post the frame and engine number, you can then ascertain what you are being offered. A genuine production Racer is worth quite a bit more than a standard Commando, but be aware that many of the components like tanks, seats, fairings etc could be ordered separately and fitted by the local dealer. So it is important that you ascertain the provenance before making an offer for what may actually be a standard roadster with some fiberglass accessories. Some of the things to look for are the position of the data plate, which was on the headstock on a standard bike but sometimes on the backbone of a PR, carburetors, front brake and forks may also give some answers.

Good luck with this.

Sorry , misread the post. Thought your dad was trying to sell . Anyways bring the camera when you see them again. I always ask how much the seller's asking price is before jumping to an offer. I wonder why he would take apart 2 low mileage Nortons to store them. Welcome to the Forum.

Larry,

A typical commando basketcase goes for 2 to 3k dollars. A real production racer goes for more.

1972 Norton 750r question

Hi Ken,
Yes I'm taking about the racer. I'm not sure which one though in the picture of the two bikes. I know it has a long front yellow fairing and a number plate on the back though.
I will know soon though. Hopefully sometime next week.

Not wishing to put the cat among the pigeons but if the bike is a genuine production racer dismantled and stored from new, yes it will need new seals etc but...
A figure of 2 to 3000 would be for a wreck, what is described so far is not a wreck.
If it has been stored properly it will be worth, in my opinion an awful lot more.
I have seem Production racers advertised for £18000. If they realise that much thats a different matter.
I guess it depends on provenance, condition and manner of storage.
Also what the guy is willing to let it go for!
You could end up with a bargain.

I would imagine that an as new PR in bits or not is a very rare thing, cannot see there being many, if any, Im not surprised you want it.

Once I get the vin number, how do i identify and read the number?
Regards

As said above, the first thing is to identify where the VIN is - that will tell you (us) more in the short term!

If you are offered a "Genuine Production Racer", the safest way to find out if it is a genuine one is to check in the production records. Andover Norton has the microfilms that the Science Museum made of the original despatch books, as well as some originals that others do not have. We can check if it is a genuine one, so can Norman White and the N.O.C.

The number stamped on the data plate, the engine and the top of the gearbox should all be the same, it should be a 6 digit number and the data pate should also have the year of manufacture stamped on it.

As LAB has pointed out you can check these with Factory records or post the number on here.

I understand that on the racers and production racers the data plate was riveted to the backbone of the frame near the tank seat junction, this is to allow for fairing mounting brackets to occupy that part of the steering headstock where the plate goes on standard Commandos.

I'm still not sure what the mystery other is.
As soon as I have a chance to go and see them I'll let you know.
