1971 OIF Triumph center stand

I've got an 1971 OIF TR6. You know, the model that nobody likes (but I do) because the seat was too high, blah blah ...

Anyway, when I put it on its center-stand it rocks on to its back wheel, with the front wheel off the ground by an inch or two. I think that the rear wheel is supposed to be the wheel that comes off the ground. So, I suspect that a PO might have put a center-stand from a different model on this machine.

Does anyone know if the center stand for the 1971s was unique? Anyone know the part number and a source for the correct item?

I think you will find it's normal for the rear wheel to be the one on the ground, as all OIF Triumphs are like that, including my '78 T140V.
The idea being that the front wheel can be removed without a jack or blocks needing to be placed under the engine.

The rear wheel can also be removed without blocks, as the bike will rock over and rest on the front wheel once the weight of the rear wheel has been removed, just remember not remove the rear wheel if the front wheel is already out.

Many BMW airhead twins also have the same stand arrangement.

It probably is the correct stand, however the early OIF main stands were slightly longer than the later ones, apparently.

Yes the 71 stands are 3/4 taller than the 72's I have a 71 stand excess to my needs PM me if you like. On my bikes the stand takes the rear wheel off the ground and the longer stand just make it harder to get up.

In the March/April 2007 edition of Motorcycle Classics (a magazine that I have found on a hit & miss basis at Barnes and Noble) they covered the 'rejuvenation' of a TR6C. They said in the article: "We also discovered the centerstand was missing a bushing which explains why the bike would flop back on its rear wheel when put up on the stand."

I can't find any such bushing on the centerstand of my bike, so that's why I thought it might be a stand from a different model. But I can't find such a bushing in my parts-book either. So, I don't have any idea what bushing they could be referring to. However, the implication is that it shouldn't drop onto its back wheel.

My bike is remarkable unmolested. Only the exhaust pipes and silencers (mufflers) are not original. And maybe this centerstand. It even had the original invoice for ₤401.75 from Harvey Owen Ltd, which I think is cool.

Certainly from my own experience of the OIF framed Triumphs they normally have the rear wheel on the ground while on the main stand (as my own T140 does), unless the stand pivots are worn, when both wheels can touch the ground.

Maybe I have been trying to fix a problem that I don't actually have!

I'm still intrigued to know what bushing the magazine was referring to on their '71 TR6C. My bike has no bushings, and the parts-book doesn't show one either.

I put over 30000 miles on a 72 oif tiger and mine would also always have the rear wheel on the ground when using the center stand so no problems.
