Ladies and Gents,

as there's at least three 1970 roadsters and a few S around here maybe somebody can help me a bit.

As I wrote elsewhere I bought a 1970 Commando which was pretty incomplete and slightly ...errr... unintelligently modified. I intend to turn it into a roadster, as close as possible to 1970 spec but with some deviations mainly for reliability and safety. It'll get a disc brake, hydraulic clutch, probably no Amals and definetly no points etc. However I'd like to get the general appearance as close as possible to spec (pretty much like the emerald green roadster from the 1970 brochure of which LAB and others posted pictures in the past) which leads to some questions:

- Halo: I don't have any ref nor any good picture of how exactly the halo detail looks like. From some internet reading I'd guess there is some special version of the old style yokes to which the halos is bolted

- Batterie carrier: I have two different carriers here. One is the p.no. 062557 on the AN website and has this longitudinal sheetmetal wall thingie. The other I couldn't find anywhere and apparently that would be the correct one for the S and early roadster as the sheetmetal wall is transversal to the frame. Same here, a pic of the battery and oil tank location and shape would help a lot!

- Seat: just judging by the look the S/early roadster seat is my preferred option (although I was told it lacks comfort). However apparently at least some of the repro seats look different, more like the later roadster seats which I really don't fancy (e.g. Bushman's: http://www.jba.bc.ca/JBCycle/NortonS.htm ). Can anybody post a pic of a repro seat with the correct proportions and a source for such?

- Side covers: As it's difficult to get the correct early side covers I'd like to make a mould and laminate my own ones in GRP. As the look to be pretty simple in shape could somebody supply me with some pics and some measurements so I could design the mould?

Best regards and TIA,

Tim

A warning about the halo. I just replaced mine with an after market one because the chrome was peeling a bit. The new one fit very poorly and gave me a lot of grief. The overall dia. was 3\4" larger than stock. I can give you dimensions if needed. You will need an upper triple clamp with threaded bosses up underneath. In my case I brazed them in and it worked fine. I have a proper oil tank as a spare and can send pictures of it out of the bike. Transverse battery carrier is the proper one. I also have the correct seat pan and cover with thicker later model foam which seems to look and work OK. I don't have a photo bucket account so photos would have to be by email.

Here are some pics of the tank, spacer and bat holder. Note the tank mounts on the bat holder with the spacer. Notice the tab on top of the oil tank too has a 1/4-28x1" hex bolt and a spacer between it and the frame. I have that spacer around here somewhere, but can't locate it right now. This is off an APR 69 S.

Let me know if you want anything else, everything I have is apart right now.

Also, I have seen the complete seat for sale somewhere, you just need to confirm the spacing of the ridges are correct. Walridge (CAN) has the complete halo for around $90CAN. I can get you the measurements on the side panels a bit later, busy right now.

Thanks, that helped a lot. Just two questions remain regarding the Halo: Is that a special upper yoke or a modified Atlas/Fastback one?

The later would be nice as I bought another bitsa which probably has the 68-70 yokes (lower yoke cast in part no is 030026).

Best regards,

That would be very nice and no need to hurry, the time scale for this project is something like "within the next decade".

EDIT: Thanks for the pictures you added, that's just what I need and it allready answers a lot of questions. According to Joe Seifert of AN/Norton Germany the oil tank doubles as the air filter back plate - makes sense to me judging by the pics.

If you can do the pics and measurements of the side panels would be great but don't hurry....

These are the part numbers for the '69 S type yokes, as listed in the 1968-70 Commando parts book.
"061131 Handlebar lug" (upper yoke)
"061133 Fork crown" (lower yoke)

The identical part numbers are also listed along with a number of other parts, in the section under the heading of:

"1970 ROADSTER ONLY

PARTS PREVIOUSLY LISTED ONLY FOR 'S' TYPE AND
NOW COMMON TO ROADSTER:"

Tim,

Yes, the oil tank was used as the rear mount of the air filter. The breather went into that round thingie at the top of the oil tank, and who knows what is in there, maybe some sort of basic liquid/air separator, and it dumped it right into the air filter which would leak down the filter an onto the gearbox, not a good situation, unless you liked a lot of oil on the top of the gearbox and the engine cradle. Here's a pic of the air filter box on the oil tank.

Here are some pics I got from a dealer that was selling the complete seat, don't ask me who, I don't know.

I think it would be better on the side panels if I made a drawing with dimensions rather than a picture which would be very confusing. I will work on it and post later.

DogT, Thanks for posting these useful photos, do the two small spacers shown go between the oil tank and the battery tray, ie spacing the bottom section of the air filter plate away from the battery tray. What thickness are they?
many thanks,
Dave M

Dave M,

The bolts are 1/4-28 x 1/2" hex UNF and the spacers are right at 0.170 or real close to 11/64" thick, 0.56 dia. or 9/16". Here is how they look installed, the nuts are integral with the battery tray and the plate serves as a tab washer that was folded onto the hex nuts heads, kind of like the tabs in the primary cover to engine.

Thanks Dave, you're a star, these sorts of details are impossible to discern from most contemporary photos and also from the parts book pertaining to this particular era of production.
Warmest regards

Yes, according to their parts search they have them, 06-1209 for right side blue, and 06-1198 left side blue. For about $71USD each.

I just went to their site to look for them but couldn't find them. Do you have a part #?
In their search engine I put Norton S side covers and nothing came up.
Were they expensive? I'd like to have an extra set because I want to change the color on my bike to that blue, but don't want to destroy the originality of my red covers and tank. I have an extra tank.

Sorry I misd the thread that had the #s
