Hi.
The front bulb, both high beam and deep beam, dont work, both the wires dont have current.
The pilot light works.
Please, where they go the wires that come from dipper switch?: W (should be the push horn and connect to NB from the horn); U where goes?; R (should connect to the ground); Light Brown where goes?
Then, the U from lighting switch goes to the UR deep beam?
But the UW main beam that goes at first to the warning light, where it goes then???
Thank you.
Piero

Piero:

I will post a wiring diagram tomorrow.

For now,

U goes from terminal 3 on main switch to pole of Dipper Switch

Brown is N. Goes from Stop light switch to stop light.

UW goes from dip switch to headlight main beam and warning light.

UR goes from dip switch to dip beam.

Main power from battery negative is NU. Goes to horn, ammeter, and Zener diode.

NW is main power from ammeter to main switch terminal 10

Check with voltmeter:

Main switch in "H" position ... should be neg 12 at main switch terminal 10 AND terminal 3.

If neg 12 is at Terminal 10 but NOT at terminal 3, then main switch is bad.

Look for wiring diagram to come soon.

Hi Slick,
Thank you.
Sorry but my Dipper Switch has: U, W, R, and a light N.
The main switch has: U / NW / RB / NG, with consecutive wires (one side to the other) from left to right.
Pilot, rear light and tacho and sppedo lights work, not main and deep beam and main warning light.
Ciao

I think Piero's Atlas is a points ignition model?

(Sorry about the poor image quality but it's the only points model diagram I have found)

My wiring diagram is same as posted by Bad_Friday. These are equal to LAB's diagram except for the points circuits. You can follow either diagram for most of the wiring.

All diagrams show dipper switch with U (pole), UW (main beam), and UR (dip beam). The U wire goes to terminal 3 on the switch. Check terminal 3 for neg 12 volts with switch in High position.

Your previous owner may have made a wiring modification. I have always found the best solution in such cases, is to bring it back to factory condition.

It is a very nice looking Atlas! Congratulations on your find, Piero!

Ciao!

Edit: I have just seen other thread where you say bike "seems to be unmolested". All the wiring diagrams I have, which cover models ES2, 50, 650 std, 650 deluxe, 650 SS, 88, 500SS, 650 American, Atlas, and 650 Manxman all have same dipper switch wiring as I note above. If unmolested, yours is an exception.

Hi All,
and thank you.
The bike has the points.
Sorry, but the dipper switch is like x picture posted.

Please,
could you tell me the colours of the wires of your dipper switch and where they are connected?
Thank you.

All wiring diagrams show dipper switch with U (pole), UW (main beam), and UR (dip beam). The U wire goes to terminal 3 on the switch. Check terminal 3 for neg 12 volts with switch in High position.

U = blue
UW = blue with white stripe
UR = blue with red stripe

Hi and thank you.
But the dipper switch has also the W for horn and a red for ground???
Please, what does it means "Check terminal 3 for neg 12 volts with switch in High position"?

What kind of dipper switch do you have? Picture.
There should only be a U, a UW and a UR cable

I think Slick means, the blue wire should show 12V measured against the frame/engine.

I could scan a better version of that, if anyone needs it.
Its Fig 31, a P11 wiriing diagram on page 55.

Piero:

if your main switch is factory standard, then turn switch to high position (head light on) and apply a voltmeter with positive meter probe (red) attached to frame/engine, and negative probe (black) touching terminal 3 on switch. The voltmeter should read minus 12 volts. Connect U wire to terminal 3.

If no voltage at terminal 3 with conditions as above, then apply black probe to terminal 2 and 10 on switch. These terminals should have NW wires connected. You should read minus 12 volts on terminals 2 and 10.

Let us know what you find.

@Rohan

Why don't you start a new thread 'Early Norton Wiring Diagrams' with your scan, then I'll add mine. We will no doubt duplicate someone else's post, but we will then have all the diagrams in one place. I have 8 diagrams, all from a Norton factory publication.

Hi Fritz and Slick,
Please where do you connect U, UW and UR cables?
What is the cable for the push horn, or the dipper sitch has the push horn in?
Thank you.

Hi.
Please, could you post some picture of your Dipper Switch?
Thank you.

…But the wires are only three?…
I'm not sure but I think there are four wires. A red, a blue/white, a blue and something dark.

Fritz

I do not know if this helps, but my all in one dipper/horn push /magneto kill switch (63 Atlas) has screw terminals. A cable with up to 5 wires could be attached. Three wires are for lights (U, UR, UW), one for horn (NB), and one for magneto kill (W). Earth for horn and magneto is via switch body.

I do not remember original configuration. I modified my cables to pass inside handlebars many years ago.
