I've just acquired a 1962 Norton model 50 and the previous owner has converted the 6 v electrics to 12 v. What would I have to do to return it 6 v and can anyone recommend a business for spares David

As Bernhard says, it depends on what has been done to convert it to 12V.
They were alternator/coil/points from new. I think it was the 3 wire 6V alternator.
My wideline ES2 has had a Commando 120W alternator fitted instead, you would need to be chasing concours points to go back to 6V from there.
As for spares, between Andover, RGM and Norvil there is reasonable range available and the NOC (UK) spares scheme can have some of the harder to get bits.

It would be a retrograde step, in terms of performance and reliability, but you did ask, so...

To change it back to 6V, you have to know what changes have been made to the bike.

You may start with how many wires emanate from the alternator stator.

If it is the original Lucas 6v alternator that has been converted to 12 with a Lucas Zener diode with heat sing, then you will have to ditch this and swap over 2 wires to convert it back to 6v. But if the alternator is a full 12v …..Impossible unless you fit the original Lucas 6v alternator.

As recommended by some, I converted my 1962 Model 50 to negative earth 12v - the alternator just needed joining two wires together (blue and brown)
Works well - I'll attach a couple of pics of what I did. I'd also recommend going with 12v and ditching the zener (go to modern regulator/rectifier)
Cheers
Rob
