Hi:

I have an early model 1959 AJS Model 31 Deluxe 650 twin, (single downtube frame) and am working to resolve a slipping clutch. I think I have everything I need, except for a primary chain case cover gasket. Having a bit of trouble locating a source for the correct gasket. I'm not sure if I am right, but it seems it might be the same as later alloy cased Model 30's or G11's and not the same as later 31's or G12's? Anyone know where I can get one? I am based in North Eastern U.S.A.

Cheers,

James

Thank you @estuary boy for your suggestion. Seems like the 1959 twin primary case is a bit of an odd ball. I ended up making one myself.

Running Ford type F ATF in the primary will increase clutch friction 35%, according to specifications. That may be all you need to resolve clutch slippage.

Hi Slick:

Thank you for the advice. I do use ATF ford type in the AJS and my two Nortons. My issue with the AJS clutch appears to be that the cush rubbers were starting to break down. On inspection they looked fine, but there was a quite a lot of of oily black rubber residue on and around the plates. Washed everything in non ethanol petrol, (not sure if the ethanol bit matters in this case) reassembled, and now all is well! When it happens again I will at the very least replace the cush rubbers.

Cheers,

James
