I have a 750 Commando fitted with 2 X 34mm Amal carbs. They look the same as Mk1's but are a lot bigger and have 1034 stamped on them..can't seem to find information on these, and I think they are too big for the bike.They are fitted onto 34mm port adaptors..the performance is a bit disappointing though it starts easily (despite monster compression) and ticks over well when warmed up. No spitting or spluttering..Does anyone know: Would I be better off with just one of these carbs: or two smaller Mk 1 Amals (I have a few 30mm's stashed) or what? If the head has been ported to 34mm also then can I use smaller carbs at all? Does anyone sell an adaptor to fit one 34mm Mk1? I have only heard of Mk 2 Amals in this size. Any thoughts welcome.
 
This is the Mark 1 1/2 or Mark 1a . These have the circuitry of the MK 2 and the flange of the Mk1. You can google "Amal Mark 1.5" and find more info. These are desirable.

I think 1 34 is more reasonable than 2. If your head is stock,30mm or 32mm for combat, an area or lip will interfere with the flow of mixture at the flange mounting. Whatever mount you use make sure it matches the ports of the head.

2 34mm carb would require some kinda venturi effect to function properly on a stock 750. Is your bike is radically modified, Cam, large header exhaust, porting, a combat head, etc?

Amals wab site has the flange and mounting you need. http://www.amalcarb.co.uk/ Do not be affraid of the distance. They are reasonable, fairly quick and have an option to show your currency. They take Paypal.

Almost any single carb conversion is 34mm. Great runner, a little weak on the top.
 
Thank you folks...you see I don't know exactly what kind of head I've got, whether it's been tweaked, or indeed what cam or pistons...shame to strip a good reliable bike just as summer's nearly here...still I like a challenge...
 
Hmmm...can't see any mention of Amal 1000 series on Amal website..nor any 34mm carb that looks like mine..

The "Spanish" Amal "1½" carbs which had the Mk2 choke plunger arrangement were 1600 & 1900 series.

Mk2s were 2600 & 2900 series.

I tried a both a single 34mm and dual 34mm Mikunis on my Combat in years past but ended up going back to stock Amals (sleeved by Bruce Chessell). All these setups ran smoothly and the bike started easily. The single Mikuni had great midrange - wheel dancing acceleration in 2nd gear. The duals had better top end power but less midrange. The stock Amals to me are the best of the three configurations I've tried. Great midrange and top end.

If it were me I would probably stick with what you have. Pretty nice carbs!

It's listed on Amal site as a MK1 1/2..but no pic....or price...as I said I am underwhelmed by the performance...I think the guy who built the motor tried too hard....high comp pistons, ???cam, big carbs...he tuned all the power out of it!

I'm sure that info. is incorrect, (as the Hitchcock's website information shows it to be)!

Amal "Mk1½" carbs were certainly 1600/1900 series, and not 1000 series.

1000 series parts list shows they had tickler parts and no enrichment plunger or lever parts, so 1000 series can't be Mk1½.

I had a pair of 1036 Amal carbs that came off a factory flat track race bike. They looked just like the 900 series Concentrics, only larger. They are visible (sort of) in the pictures below. Because of their size, I couldn't use them for anything, so I eventually sold them. That was back in the '70s, before the new Amals came out. Back then, if you wanted a Concentric carb larger than 32 mm, this was the only choice. We used to bore the 32s out to 33 mm, but that was about the limit.

Most of the 1000 series carbs were made in spain and are 2 stroke jobs with the slanted spray tube. I have aquired a small collection for two race bikes and converted them to 4 stroke. heres some before and after shots.cheers. Bottom photo is of 33mm amal.
