Hi.
To day i have disassembled the time cover because there was a little oil leak.
With the engine very cold from the chest is gone out 0,200 lt of oil.
The bike was folded to the left on the side stand.
It is normal that there is so much oil in the chest?
Thank you.

Hi Mike,

Piero:

0.4 litre per day is a bad case of classic wet sumping. That is not unusual.

Search this Forum for wet sumping solutions, but do not use the automatic in-line anti sump valve.

Hi Slick,
I understand.
I think that wet sumping is not a great problem for Norton twins.
In any case, what solution can you suggest?.
Thank you.

Best solution, IMO, is the AMR modification. At 70 $US it is good price, but in your case shipping can double that.

Otherwise, you can live with the problem, or rebuild the oil pump. AMR installs an O ring on the oil pump shaft. Perhaps you can find a shop in Italy that can do that modification to the oil pump.

Hi Lick,
I have never seen before this AMR modification (sorry but neither know who is AMR!).
Habe you a picture, please.
Thank you.

Does the bike have a problem with wet sumping between rides? If it does not, then don't worry about it, losing oil with the timing cover off is normal. If it does, the simplest solution is to drain the oil from the tank when the bike is not in use. The AMR modification works well, but not perfectly, if the bike sits long enough with oil in the tank, it will wet sump eventually.

AMR is Alternative Motorcycle Repair - Tucson AZ USA
http://www.amr-of-tucson.com/index.html

The modification involves a change to your timing cover which uses a spring loaded ball on the pump outlet port, and an O ring internal to the oil pump that prevents oil weep between chambers of the pump. You would have to ship timing cover and pump to AMR.

As Mike B says, it is not perfect, but IMO well worth the cost if you are in the US.

Hi Mike and Slick,
My 750 commando with 850 MK3 timing cover and anti wet sump system works well but not perfectly the same.
I dont think it is necessary, the best choise is "to use often the bike!".
Thank you.

Depends if you have other problems with the oil pump; for example remove the oil pump to check that the plate is not standing proud of the oil pump body where it bolts to the case, also always replace the O ring at the oil pump /timing case every time you remove the timing case.
