I think I can re-fit this chain if I remove a few links to get some range back on the adjuster screws...

I understand your sentiments, GP.

I refused to throw away about 1 lb. of sheet metal screws, and carried them with me from move to move for about 30 years. I finally put them to good use when I built my house; in the central heating /AC ductwork.

You just hit on my CORE REASON not to throw it away.

With as many bikes as I have, I KNOW a time will come that it can be used as a temporary measure.
 
I never throw anything out that I think could be useful at anytime, I have a habit of picking up things up off the ground that might help when out and about, you never know one day might come in handy, I built up a good nut and bolt collection from my what people chuck out.
 
I still have a a set of ace bars somewhere that I took off my yam yr5 in 1977
 
Yep, just used to considerably-used Posi-Drive screws to mount a keyswitch on my ZRX-ADV that I had to drill out the security screws for. Took 10 seconds and 3 tries to get 2 that worked...

I hate throwing stuff away...
 
If the screws are that bad or worse, I grind the head into a six point so an 8mm or 5/16'' socket will fit.
 
I made a deal with the guys at the metal recycling plant and get not much of a bonus in return for parts that they offer in their side yard.
But after a while its either build another shop to accommodate the piles of parts and baskets of leftover "stuff", or...get creative with the old parts and the welder.
One of a lot.

You hoarders are going to dislike ( hate ? ) me for this tale of blasphemy. In the 1970’s I moved my parents from NJ to Florida .
Amongst the items saved by my dad was an old army duffel bag. In said bag were a number of empty coffee cans and a small card box with a few pieces of bronze wool - some of it used . All went to a storage facility while their house was being completed. When their house was ready I helped move the goods from the storage unit - duffel bag included . Some years later I moved them to a different home - duffel bag ( contents untouched) included.
Some years later moved them again to Maryland along with the untouched duffel bag. Years later moved again back to NJ . When my dad brought out the still untouched duffel bag ( yep - used bronze wool scraps still intact) I made him toss it . Enough is enough.
 
I remember moving a babe I lived with. Had to move all the jars she had saved beneath the kitchen sink. When she got to the new crib she tossed them out. Well, half a loaf I suppose!
Mentioned it to her some time later and she laughed and told what her father told her mother when he saw her beneath the sink
stash:
"ALICE! THE DEPRESSION IS OVER!"
Priceless...
 
My brother and I had to clean out the attic of our parents house after my father passed last year. I never knew my mother to be a hoarder but do you have any idea how many shirt,shoe, and gift boxes you can accumulate in 61 years living in the same house?
