I placed an order with AN on December 15th and it was delivered on December 22nd. I am in the beginning stages of my 74' Commando 850 rebuild. The order amounted to over $1200.00 USD, with the biggest savings coming from the purchase of a set of Amal Premiers. The savings on them alone saved about $110.00USD from anywhere else I could find. Those and a gasket set, hardware, specialty tools, new ISO kits, and main bearings, etc, allowed me to save 400-500 dollars, even with the $65.00 in UPS shipping and $73.00 in additional import fees collected by UPS. The only head scratching and/or dramatic moment was when I received an email from UPS in the days before the delivery. You can read it below and perhaps see what I mean.
The letter left me believing that my order could well wind up in limbo or returned. I was led to believe that it was my responsibility to fill out forms concerning metal content of the items in the shipment. Fearing the worst, I did manage to fill out the forms "by guess and by golly".
I contacted AN, and they told me that they had included the proper forms for metal import already. They said this was the new normal for shipping to the USA. A day or two later, I got an email stating my package had cleared customs. Next, it sat for 3 days before UPS emailed to tell me I owed the additional $73.00. Once that was paid it was sent on to me.
Ordering from Andover Norton saved me some real money and was only 8 days from AN warehouses to my door. But the wording of the original letter, which I believe should have rightly been sent to AN, not me, shook me up enough to waste 45 minutes filling out forms that I probably didn't need to do. Unfortunately, AN didn't have everything I wanted to buy in stock when I placed my order. The gear box overhaul kit , for example, could have saved me another $50.00 or so, but they were out at that moment. I would be interested in hearing from anyone else of their experienced with AN to the states since the tariffs started. Merry Christmas!

Very strange! Not sure how AN sold you AMAL carbs for less than AMAL since AN charges 399.50 GBP for your carbs (before duties, fees, and shipping) and AMAL charges 391.44 GBP (before duties, fees, and shipping). I'm a big fan of AN but quite confused how you saved $110 on something that cost 9 GPB more from AN!

Greg, I know you deal with this issue much more than I do, so your way of looking it is probably the true one, and my way is the fuzzy math version. My way of looking at it is as follows-
Andover Norton price for Amal card in USD =539.44
Total shipping and import fees for my order= $138.00
If my carbs accounted for half of the orders shipping and import fees, then we could add $69.00 to the carbs price.
So rounding up, the total carbs cost was $610.00 USD. Still cheaper (before taxes and shipping) than anything I could find on any website here in the states.
So yeah, maybe I was too quick to say I saved $110.00. I was simply comparing the AN price in USD to prices I found elsewhere here in the USA.
The entire order when compared to one of my regular parts retailers here in the states was still hundreds of dollars less expensive. That's my fuzzy math answer!
Merry Christmas to all!

My recent AN orders to the states had no problems
So, no such email as I received? That was the part that had me puzzled. All in all, my order wasn't really a problem, nor was it delayed. It was just a bit of a hassle that I think should not have involved me at all.

I looked through my emails through August 2025 ,there was no email like that.

This was one explaining the situation, sent to me 08/2025

They have it sorted now, and there are no problems with ordering

It's true than many in the US have ridiculous markups. My point was that had you ordered form AMAL, you would have paid less.

The duty from the UK is 25% no matter the supplier. The shipper charges a fee for handling customs. UPS: $14, DHL: $17, Royal Mail $6-$9

DHL charges more for shipping than UPS, but when something is done wrong, they provide a phone number and email to dispute it - UPS makes it hell to dispute but it is possible.

On my last order shipped by UPS (all USD):

$1908 parts
$119.10 shipping
$477 duties (25% of 1908)
$14 brokerage fee
$12 "pre-paid fee"
UPS tried to charge an additional $231 for me incorrectly completing the invoice! Of course, AN is the shipper and they make the invoice and there was absolutely nothing wrong with it. After many emails and a total of over 15 hours on the phone, they finally removed the $231 fee but I had to talk to their billing dept to pay the duty and fees so they added the $12 "pre paid fee".

To say that no one in the US has better prices...that's simply not true. Email me the next time you need parts.

There are no problems when the shipper is Royal Mail - AN collects the 25% tariff and Royal Mail fees. Orders over 2kg cannot go Royal Mail and the problems continue with UPS and DHL making mistakes, gouging, and plain can't get out of their own way. Also, much of what you posted is incorrect now. Copper from the UK is 25% just like steel and aluminum. The 15% has nothing to do with the UK - it's EU. There were three executive orders that took effect on August 29th but two were not widely known/understood when that was written.

Greg, I think you are correct that UPS has issues in dealing with these import fees. For all I know, they may have used the "Section 232 Form" that I filled out, which was 100% guesswork. The $73.00 additional fees that UPS collected from me seems mighty low compared to what you paid. My order totaled roughly $1195.00 USD on December 15 2025.
Maybe I got lucky. Andover Norton assured me that they had submitted the proper forms to UPS. I honestly have no idea what happened. I can only say that my order from AN,
shipped UPS, with duties/fees collected by UPS, was 400-500 dollars less than a well known parts supplier, (that I choose not to name) would have billed me for the same goods.
They had everything I needed in stock.
You state on your website that you do not have any Amal Premier sets for 850 Commandos. I have purchased from you before and was well pleased, but I went shopping around since you didn't have the carbs. Another vendor in the USA has the same exact Amal Premiers PACK 136 for $650.00 with free shipping but not sure if they collect tax on sales to my state. To buy the carbs alone from AN today would cost $709.52 USD, shipped via Royal Mail. So, indeed a savings could be had there. Next parts order, I will reach out and see what you can help me with!
Thank you and Merry Christmas!

If UPS charged you less than 25% of the parts cost + $14 then expect a bill in the mail  It's not on the order total, it's on the parts total. So, if your order was $1195 and shipping was $95 then the duty should be ($1100 * .25)+$14 = $289. If they only made you pay $73, they screwed up and will be coming for more (at least they usually do).

BTW, based on the bike you stated, PACK 136 is not correct - it should PACK 138 but they are actually the same so no harm/no foul. It's really a matter of the sub-numbers on the carbs you are replacing.

I'm trying to decide if I want to once again fight the nightmare of ordering 8 sets from AMAL. AMAL is great, shipping isn't and with the tariffs and the AMAL price increases, people have been asking for Wassell Evolution carbs. I have most AMAL 750 sets in stock, pre-tariff, but just before the tariffs hit, people with 850s ordered what I had. I wish they had ordered sooner as I could have replenished my stock before tariffs hit. I did that with other vendors like Tri-Spark.
